Questions and Answers C. J. REYNOLDS DENNIS HOGUE (Written by freshman, Becky O'Neal, this letter expresses something of her thoughts and feehngs about Chowan after a month of school. Dear Mom & Dad, Just a line to let you know I've survived the first two weeks of college, but it's hard to be lieve! Anyone who can live through registration day can take anything, even Rat Court (which I’ll tell you all about when I see you)! My schedule is (I hope) final ly permanent, after about five or six changes, drops, and ad ditions, I have all my subjects, BUT at the wrong periods. I don't have much free time (ugh) every morning (ugh! ugh!), therefore, some mornings I just cas't seem to make it to break fast. That orange juice (which is hot from lack of refrigeration) ties me over 'til lunch — some times. I haven't purchased all of my books, as there was an insu^ ficient supply ordered; thus, keeping up with studies is a bit difficult at times. Yes, Mom, it's just like you said: Southerners are slower and don't rush, rush, rush, all the time, but I like it! I don't feel as exhausted taking my time! (Oh, I met two kids from Dela ware and they are real neat!) You should see my room. Re member the old saying, "Clothes man the man”? Well, in m y case, "Curtains make the room.” It sure feels “homey" since they were put up. I love Dorm "B" and the girls are real neat! I really love it here and it With the air filled with the flavor of big time politics, the students of Chowan went to the polls early last month and voted for their class officers. The elec tions took place on Friday. Octo ber 2. At the start of election week candidates made their presence known by the use of signs around the campus. One candidate had signs around just about every other tree to proclaim his nomi nation. This same candidate had a big sign in the form of a banner, flying from the Columns Building. He did not win. Active Campaign During the chapel periods on Friday t h e students were al lowed to hear the various plat forms that each candidate sub scribed to. That afternoon from noon to s i x p.m. elections were held. Voting was done in the New Student Center by secret ballot. Raynoidi PrMidcnt Elected by the freshman class were: C. J. Reynolds, president; Roberta Hare. Vice-president; Patricia Rivers. Secretary-Treas- urer; and Loretta DeLaura so cial co-chairman. A male social co-chairman will be appointed by the administration because no one filed for that post. This year's upperclassmen vote in Dennis Hogue as president. Other Sophomore class officers elected were: John Arendts, vice-president; and Joann Cog- liandro as Social Co-chairman A male social co-chairman will be appointed since no one filed for this post. To be on the ballot candidates had to file a petition and be cer- ified by the registrar. To vote a student had to pay his $10.00 student government fee. isn't as difficult as I anticipated to get back into the "swing of study and classrooms." There are times, though, when I hear an instructor say, "Remember back in high school—," then I feel like I've been absent from study for ten years instead of one! The faculty is, as I'd expected: friendly and helpful to the stu dents, and we’re not just “a number” in class, but individ uals. Anyone in need of assist ance may obtain it merely by asking. As for the spiritual atmos phere on campus, it's about as I'd contemplated, but there’s al ways room for growth. You know, out of the ten colleges to which I applied I'm truly thank ful I was led to Chowan. I know just as in other things I’ve ac- comphshed, as long as I work hard, have faith and confidence in myself, and follow the leader ship of His guiding hand. I’ll make it!! Well, I've got to go. You must excuse the mistakes. (If you were writing while trying to hold 3 flashlight and bed covers, you'd probably make mistakes too! Lights had to be out at 12, but I simply had to finish this tonight.) Love 'ya, Becky PS Tell everyone ‘round home, "Hello!" PSS Give "Frissie" a bone and don't forget to bring him when you come.
