Floyd Woodward ☆ ☆ ☆ Pioneering in Christian higher education, Chowan College con tinues preparing young people for careers in rapidly changing and exciting enterprises. I CHOWAN PLAYERS FEATl^RED IN “OUR TOWN”—In a wedding scene in the drama, “Our Town”, are Lewis Paynter, South Hill, Va., and Frances Merkel, Richmond, Va. They are shown in one of tha wedding scenes from Thornton Wilder’s play being presented at Chowan College on March 3, 4 and 5. Drama Production Planned The second production for the year for The Chowan Players will be their presentation of "Our Town” on March 3, 4, and 5 in the college auditorium. The play and players are under the direction of Mrs. Edith Larson, Dramatist and member of the Depart ment of English. Featured in the play by Thornton Wilder are: Frances Merkel, Richmond, Virginia, who is a cheerleader and a member of the Homecoming Court. She hopes to attend college and major in psychology. Lewis Paynter, South Hill, Virginia, was a member of the cast for the first production this year. He plans a career in business administration. James Smith, Warsaw, Virginia, who perfers comic roles but is seen as a more serious character in “Our Town”. Sandra Tierney of Norfolk, Virginia, participated in several plays in high school and was active in the Thespians Club. A sopohomore, she was staged in “Lord Byron’s Love Letters” last year at Chowan. Dedee MacAdoo, Petersburg, Va., was born in Germany but came to America at the age of eleven. During high school days she participated in school plays. Irwin Coons, Richmond, Virginia, played football in high school and was active in Junior Red Cross activities. He plans a future in engineering. Our Cover Busy Television News Executive Got Start on Chowan Newspaper New Hospital (ACP)—The small South Viet namese village of Long Yen may have a new medical clinic as a result of fund-raising ef forts by Michigan State Uni versity’s chapter of the People- to-People Assn. ’The chapter raised $500 by sell ing Rose Bowl souvenirs at air ports, railroad stations and bus depots as tour groups were leav ing for Pasadena. This money and $1,000 more to be raised by fund-raising pro jects will be sent to the village of Long Yen, which has a popu lation of alMUt 3,000, to build a five-room medical clinic. The MSU chapter hopes to staff the clinic with a male nurse and a pharamacist, according to Jud ith Rice, chapter president. Pre sent medical facilities have only one midwife. John R. Griffin '56 busy Di rector of News and Public Af fairs for Norfolk’s WTAR-TV, makes time in his busy schedule to serve as President of the Cho wan College Alumni Association. Murfreesboro Native A Murfreesboro native, he whetted his appetite for news coverage by working with THE CHOWANIAN when he was a Chowan College student. He is now in command of a 38-man newsgathering team. Work with photographic layouts for THE CHOWANIAN prepared him for the time news photographers under his direction would win awards for outstanding news photography. Among Specialties Documentaries, involving dif ficult camera techniques, are among his specialties today and he credits work on the Chowan College campus with giving him JOHN GRIFFIN the background for his present accomplishments. Many miles are put on his car each year, fitting the interests of Chowan College into his busy newsgathering schedule. Al though covering Tidewater news and public affairs is a demand ing cuid time-consumng job, he also covers the nation and world in the interest of Alumni Assoc iation activities. While commanding his 38-man organization, he is now laying the groundwork for organizing former Chowan College students in the Tidewater area into an Alumni club, or, possibly. Alum ni clubs. During a recent visit to cam pus, a co-ed pointed to the tall and handsome young television news executive and asked her companion, “Who is that man? He looks awfully familiar. I’m sure I’ve seen him somewhere before.” "Yes,” replied her companion, “you sure have. You’ve seen a lot of him on TV and you’ve seen him around here a lot, too, be cause he’s one of us.” PACE TWO THE CHOWANIAN
