Contract is Awarded for Library Building 1 Chowan Board of Trustees Accepts Bid Entered by Dickerson, Inc., Contractors Chowan College’s Board of Trustees, meeting on campus in semi-annual session on Monday, February 13th, accepted the bid of Dickerson, Inc., construction engineers of Monroe, and contracted this firm to build the new library-fine arts facility. FOUNDATION GIFT TO CHOWAN — Mrs. Lillian Morris, representing the Sears-Roebuck Foundation, presented Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker, President of Chowan College, a check representing the Foundation’s $1,000.00 unrestricted grant to Chowan. She is manager of Roanoke-Rapids’ Sears-Roebuck Com pany store. Bids for this construction were open ed on campus February 9 and brought to the attention of the Exe cutive Committee of the Board of Trustees that evening. Dickerson was among five North Carolina companies submitting bids. When completed, the library-fine arts facility at Chowan, which will shelve 100,000 volumes, seat more than 400 students and faculty in several reading areas, and contain space and equipment for music, drama and expansion of the col lege’s fine arts program, will cost $800,000.00, equipped. Dickerson’s low base bid was $708,- 485.00, with the college accepting an alternate of $20,900.00, and acceptance of this bid, which was the lowest sub mitted, by the college’s Board of Trustees, means that the initial and basic construction cost to Chowan College will be $687,585.00. During the Fall, the college entered into a Development Campaign to raise necessary funds fr.- this build ing and other necessary expansion Oi campus facilities by 1973, the year Chowan observes its 125th anniver sary. The first phase of this cam paign exceeded its $500,000.00 goal by December 16, 1966, with $538,387.00 pledged mainly by members of the Chowan College Family division. The second phase, with a goal of $150,- 000.00, is now in progress and the third phase, also with a goal of $150,- 000.00, will follow. Wives and husbarids of trustees accompanied Board of Trustees members. They were special guests of the college at a reception in the historic Columns Building, tours of Murfreesboro and the campus, and also for a special luncheon in the President’s Room of the college cafeteria. Presiding was Don G. Matthews, Jr., First District Highway Commis sioner from Hamilton, who was elected Chairman during the meet ing. New Trustees New trustees, starting a term of service with the meeting were, Ollie M. Brown, Ahoskie; Mrs. Lois A. Daniel, Wake Forest; J. E. Ferebee, Camden; Rev. Bennie Pledger, Cole- rain; Frank S. Pittman, Scotland Neck; Charles L. Revelle, Sr., Mur freesboro; Charles Lee Smith, Jr., Raleigh. The Reverend Thomas Caulkins of Goldsboro began a term, joinnig the college’s Board of Trus tees to complete an unexpired term of the Reverend Billy Mobley of Jacksonville, who resigned in order to accept another position with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina.
