Alumni in the News Class of 1893 MRS. CLAUD GORE, the former Mamie Brewer and a daughter of the late Dr. John B. Brewer, President of Chowan College from 1881-1896 and 1918-1920 has died. Chowan was noti fied of Mrs. Gore’s death by her daughter, Mrs. Edward R. Tull of Rockingham, N. C. Class of 1918 MRS. JESSE JONES, the former GERTRUDE TAYLOR, is the author of “North Carolina History of the American Cancer Society,” copyright 1966 by the North Carolina Division of the American Cancer Society and published by Irving-Swain Press, Inc., Raleigh. A copy of this volume has been contributed to Chowan College’s library by the author, who is noted as “one of the state’s oldest and most active volunteers in the fight against cancer.” She organized most of the ACS chapters in eastern North Carolina. Back in the early 40’s when the Can cer Society was the Women’s Field Army and cancer was a whispered word, she hauled a projector from town to town and attempted to edu cate the public about the disease. Mrs. Jones also writes short stories and has won a blue ribbon for one she wrote about Fort Macon. She is the widow of a Kinston attorney and her daughters, Betsy (now Mrs. James Todd of Kinston) and Gertie (now Mrs. R. C. O’Dowd of Winston- Salem) have given her seven grand children. Class of 1957 CHARLIE DELANO BLYTHE was recently named “J a y c e e of the Month” by the Roanoke Rapids Junior Chamber of Commerce. He is a state director for the Jaycees who was pre sented the “Key Man Award” in 1965 and is a foreman in the Forestry Department of Albemarle Paper Com pany. CHOWAN COLLEGE’S SPRING CONVOCATION ADDRESS was delivered by Dr. Jack R. Noffsinger, center, outstanding youth speaker, author and theologian who pastors Winston-Salem’s Knollwood Baptist Church. Dr. Noffsinger contrasted the religious fervor of Communist youth, as seen in China’s Red Guards, with the apathy and unconcern of modem young Americans. Class of 1961 ALLEN AUTRY is a pai-tner in the Investment and Pension Service firm of Autry and Martin of Winston- Salem. He received both his Bache lor’s degree and his law degree from Wake Forest and is married to the former Dianna Wilson of Madison, N. C., also a graduate of Wake Forest. Class of 1963 VIVIAN CAROL MASON is now livin® in Na'^una, Va. MRS. JOHN H. SANDFORD, the former CAROLE DIANNE LINDSEY, who serves the Norfolk and Tide water Area Chapters of the Chowan College Alumni Association as Presi dent, now lives in the University Garden Apartments at 5817 Frament Avenue, Apartment 201, Norfolk, Va. She and her husband formerly lived at Virginia Beach. A graduate of Lehigh University, he is with the Ford Motor Company. They expect their first child in April. Class of 1964 WILLIAM BROOKS PRINCE, chairman of the Republican party or- pnization in North Carolina’s Wash ington County, is being listed in the first edition of “Who’s Who in Ameri can Politics.” GLENN WILLIAM ROLLINS, JR., is now serving in the United States Air Force. His home is in Warsaw, N. C., and he formerly reported sports news for a number of newspa pers ii’ that area. While a Chowan student, he was sports editor for “The Chowanian.” Class of 1965 LULA DIANNE FREEMAN and Edward Carroll Evans. They live at Winterville, N. C., and he is a student at Pitt Technical Institute. Class of 1966 ELLEN LANE CARROLL and James Benson Aycock. They are mak ing their home at Cameron Court, Raleigh, N. C. MARY CAROLYN EVANS and JAMES WILSON PIERPOINT. They live in Murfreesboro. WILLIAM HUGH PAYNE of Bur lington, who has been active in cam pus life with the Baptist Student Union, is now serving in the United States Navy. GLENN LAMAR CLARK, former Most Valuable Player for Chowan’s gridron Braves, is living at Fayette ville. He formerly lived in Lexington. He is a salesman for Reynolds Alu minum Company and his address is 4634 Canterburv Road, Fayetteville, N. C. JANET RAE LEONARD, former all-around athelete and campus recre ation leader, is a varsity starter and high-scorer for Old Dominion College’s girls basketball team. Janet’s gym- runners opened the season against her former team-mates at Chowan’s gymnasium. Chowan Graduate Reports From Cuba The former Elsa Miranda, class of 1957, is now married and has three sons: 5%, 4%, and nine months old. She reports that her husband is a Christian and that the Lord has bless ed them, but she feels very sad be cause she believes she will never see her friends in the United States again.
