The 1972 Chowan Baseball Squad Prospects Good for Baseball Team Improvements in all areas was the outlook for Chowan College’s baseball team which opened its regular season with a home doubleheader March 17 against Chesapeake. Last year a freshman- dominated club compiled a 14-14 record overall and 1&-10 in the Cavalier-Tarheel Conference. Coach Jerry Hawkins believes these marks can be improved and points to the competition for starting berths as proof. “At most positions, at least two players are in the running for the first team,” Hawkins, who has been at Chowan since 1958, noted. Even the club’s returning most valuable player, first baseman EM Herring of Virginia Beach, who batted .356, is not inunune Waging a battle with Herring for the starting lineup is Jim Stanko of Old Bridge, N. J., a guard on the Braves’ football team. Sophomore Randy Michie of Chesapeake has the inside track at second base but he’s a question mark because of a knee injury sustained during basketball season. Lou Willis, sophomore let- terman from Eastville, Va., and 1 Co-Captains Eddie Herring, Bill Henley Larry Lewis of Suffolk, Va. are competing at shortstop while carryover Ricky Leonard of Rocky Mount and freshman Ronald Powell of Cary are third base candidates. One of the strongest positions is catcher with two lettermen back, Bill Henley of Virginia Beach, considered the regular catcher last year, and Ronald Perry of Ahoskie, who saw considerable action. Hawkins reports that an improved Perry is pushing Henley for the first team. As a freshman, Henley provided Chowan with the long ball while batting .333. There is only one holdover in the outfield, left fielder, Tom Ptiilopena of Alexandria, Va., but Hawkins is not dismayed. “We have some fine freshmen,” Hawkins stated. “Ray Rawls of Carrsville, Va. has hooked good at centerfield and Freddy Knight and Carl Lancaster are also contenders for the first team,” the Braves” coach said. Knight is from Gastonia and Lancaster’s hometown is LaGrange. In the pitching department, Hawkins predicts “we’ll be stronger this year.” Heading the list is Ronnie Albertson of Port- snouth, Va., who had a 6-4 mark in 1971. All of his losses were by one run. Another sophomore who appears to be headed for the starting rotation is Roger Waxmunski of West Point, Va. The picture is brightened with the addition of two newcomers from Virginia Beach, freshman Mike Sweezey and sophomore David Winecoff, a transfer from Wof ford. Hawkins feels that a number of teams have a shot at the title. He holds special respect for College of the Albemarle with its sophomore-studded lineup. The Dolphins were briefly the nation’s number one junior college power last season. Although defending champion Louisburg lost “about two-thirds of their players from last year’s team,” according to Hawkins, Chowan’s coach does not take the Hurricanes lightly. “You can look for them to put togethe- another good team,” The Schedule MARCH 17 Chesapeake College DH Home 18 Durham College DH Home 22 COA CDH Home 25 Sandhills Comm.
