Christian Focus Week Is Successful

Lions Club Gives
$500 to "Mission
Possible' Effort
Ahoskie’s Lions Club
unanimously voted recently to
give $100 each year for the next
five years to Chowan College’s
“Mission Possible” development
program which will raise one
million dollars for the con
struction of a new science-
engineery facility on the college
campus.
Commenting on the gift, Lions
Board of Directors member
Russell Lee said, “we are glad to
contribute to Chowan’s Mission
Possible and we hope that other
clubs in the area will follow suit.”
Science Meeting
Held Feb. 23
The Department of Science
sponsored a high school physics
teacher’s conference Wednesday,
Fetouary 23.
At 10 a. m., the teachers met at
the entrance of Robert Marks
Hall to have coffee and to get
acquainted. Professor George
Hazelton spoke to the group at
10:30 on “A New Approach to
Teaching Physics.”
At 12 noon they dined together
in Thomas Cafeteria. After lunch
the group returned again to the
amphitheatre of Marks Hall to
hear Dr. Carl Adler of the
Department of Physics of East
Carolina University speak.

"Reach Out” was the theme for
a week of personal evaluation,
self-expression, and learning as
Christian Focus Week was ob
served on the Chowan College
campus March 12-17. A team of
seven persons lead in the ac
tivities, which are conducted
semi-annually and alternates
with Religious Emphasis Week.
Tema Members
Serving as team members
were Dr. Art Driscoll, Dr. Mahan
Siler, Mrs. Miriam Pritchard,
Dr. Tom Turner, Mr. Alan
Compton, Dr. Gordon Kingsley
and Dr. Timothy Pennell.
Dr. Driscoll served as coor
dinator for the week’s activities.
He is a consultant to the Student
Works Ministries in Nashville,
Tennessee. R. Siler, pastor of the
Ravensworth Baptist Church in
Annadale, Virginia, was con
cerned with efforts to involve the
church in social action.
Mrs. Miriam Pritchard, a
housewife and mother, was
formerly associated with the
Department of Student Work of
the North Carolina Baptist State
Convention. A professor of
physics at Wake Forest
University, Dr. Turner is a
populfir speaker with college
groups.
Mr. Compton is under ap
pointment by the Foreign Mission
Board as a missionary to Latin
America. His specialty is in
radio-television ministry.
Professors Take Part
A professor of surgery at
Bowman Gray Sttiool of
Medicine, Dr. Pennell is an ad
vocate of a greater role for
layment in church affairs. Dr.
Kingsley is Professor of English
and Director of Special
Programs at William Jewell
College.
Christian Focus Week was
planned by a committee of
students who worked closely with
Dr. Hargus Taylor, Chaplain to
the College, and Dr. Driscoll.
Student co-chairmen were Hugh
Clark, sophomore and Barry
Bradberry, a freshman.
Chaplain Taylor has defined
the week by saying, “it is a time
to focus the mind and heart upon
the issues of conunon concern to
the whole campus community in
the pilgrimmage towards
maturity in faith.”
Group Discussions
In working for this goal,
seminars and group discussions
were held on the basis of student
interest. Topics included “The
Christian and the Drug Scene,”
“On Finding Yourself,” “Where
Do We See Jesus?” and
“Christianity and Human
Sexuality.”
A “Marturion” was held on one
evening in the Askew Student
Union. “Marturion” is a Greek
word meaning to “testify” or “to
bear witness.” In modem ver
nacular it means a “happening”
or a “sharing.” Persons were
invited to come and share
something which was deeply
meaningful to them and their
outlook on life.
Coffee House
The team members and
students became better
acquainted during an open house
in the Askew Student Union.
Entertainment and dialogue with
team members were offered in
an informal atmosphere.
College officials were high in
their praise for the team mem
bers in their efforts for Christian
Focus Week. The affair was
termed as a “smashing success”
by many student, faculty and
staff members.

FOR NEW BUILDING—The earth moving has been
completed in preparation for pouring the “footings” for
Chowan’s new science-engineering facility. The new
structure is being placed to the rear of the campus,
between historic McDowell Columns and the football
stadium.
