• Dr. Whitaker Wins Jaycee State Award Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker, a native of Cleveland County, and president of Chowan College, was named “Boss of the Year” by the North Carolina Jaycees February 26 at the Hilton Inn in Raleigh. Dr. Whitaker is the son of Mrs. Oveda E. Whitaker of Route 3, Shelby, and the late Mr. F. A. Whitaker. Earl Dilday, president of the Murfreesboro Jaycees stated that Dr. Whitaker was selected from 26 nominees sponsored by participating clubs of the 235 Jaycee clubs in the state. Several Murfreesboro Jaycees were present for the presentation. The “Boss of the Year” has five charac teristics. First, the boss has to be an employer of a Jaycee in good standing. Scope and activity of Boss’s work, exceptional achievement or ac complishment in a chosen field, contributions to the local chapter and contributions to the community are other factors. “Dr. Whitaker more than met these qualifications,” Dilday explained. As president of Chowan College, he has nine Jaycees in his employment. Dr. Whitaker, president of the Murfreesboro Rotary Club, in 1971 served as president of the North Carolina Literary and Historical Association and was 1971 Eastern North Carolina Christmas Seal Chairman. “Since becoming president of Chowan College in 1957, the college has had phenomenal growth,” said Dilday. Today it has an enrollment of 1,533 students and is currently involved in a one million dollar campaign to secure funds for a critically needed science-engineering facility. Twenty-Three Students Named to Who's Who Twenty-three Chowan College sophomores have been selected for inclusion in Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges. Dr. B. Franklin Lowe, Jr., dean of the college, said the students were nominated by a committee of faculty and staff members and approved by Who's Who. Lowe explained that the students were selected on the basis of academic achievement, participation in extracurricular activities, general contribution to the campus and community, and promise of future potential. “The 23 chosen are indeed honor students,” Lowe commented. “We at Chowan are proud of them and pleased with the recognition they have received.” Lowe noted there are many Jackson Editor The Publications Committee of the college met recently in a special called meeting and voted to name Richard Jackson as editor of SMOKE SIGNALS, Chowan’s student newspaper. Jackson will fill the unexpired term of Miss Teresa Shoulders, who resigned from the college recently, according to Herman Gatewood, faculty advisor for the newspaper and chairman of the Publications Committee. Jackson is a Freshman, a native of Portsmouth, Va., and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ellis J. Jackson. A pre-journalism student here, he plans to transfer to Virginia Commonwealth University after graduation. outstanding young people at Chowan. “It was difficult to narrow our list to the ones selected, but the committee felt these were especially qualified to be included in the list of out standing junior college students from across the nation,” Lowe observed. The 10 men and 13 women represent six states. They are; James Brewington Acker, Ray Jennings Brigman, Timothy Michael Brown, Gary McKenzie Brock, Sterling Calvert Gatling, James Thomas Hunter, Jerry Andrew Morris, Michael Gary Sternberg, Robert Watkins,II, Anton Douglas Wingerter, Miss Robin Andrews, Miss Faye Bellamy, Miss Linda Lee Carawan, Miss Patsy Ann Copeland, Miss Judy Davis, Mrs. Mary Gay Taylor Evans, Miss Rhonda Fenstermacher, Miss Glenda Grizzard, Miss Betty Hurdle, Mrs. Rose Willey Massey, Miss Faye Overstreet, Miss Donna Pullen and Mrs. Sue Ella Garner Willis.
