Two Chowan Students Win Beauty Titles Each was a queen in her own right and each one looked the part as young wotfien from all of the county’s towns were in terviewed Saturday night, September 30, so that one of them could be chosen “Miss Bertie” to reign during the two-week celebration. Miss Carrie DiAnne Bowen, a student at Chowan College and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Bowen of Windsor, will be wearing the county crown. Her selection was made by these judges: Mrs. E. B. Lassiter of Ahoskie, one of the founders of the Ahoskie Gallery Theatre and director of several productions there as well as an actress in several productions; Robert Godard, past president and vice president of the Williamston Jaycees and a member of the Williamston Town Board. He has attended the Miss North Carolina Contest for the past four years and was at the 1972 Miss America, pageant as sponsor of Miss Martin County. The third judge was Max Ray Joyner, regional manager for Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company, Greenville. Miss Bertie County attended Bertie Senior High School and is a graduate of the North Carolina School of the Arts. She attended Mars Hill College her freshman year and is assistant to the Art Department at Chowan College. She is a member of Cashie Baptist, Phi Kappa Phi Little Sister, National 4-H Electric Development Committee and secretary of the Student Government Association at Chowan. The most recait honor to come her way was being selected as the only girl in the United States to serve on the National 4-H Electric Development Com mittee representing the 4.9 million 4-H’ers. She has been a 4- H Club member eight years and has held local, county and district offices. She is in the pre-education curriculum at Chowan and plans to further her education as a major in home economics conrununication arts with a minor in art. M ISS LEWISTON- WOODVILLE—AChowan CoUege student. Miss Elma Yvonne Mitchell is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Mitchell of Lewiston. She is a graduate of Bertie Senior High and has a diploma in secretarial science from Chowan. She is now working on an associate degree at Chowan, where she is an honor roll student. She was captain of the Senior High School band during her senior year. She is a member of the First Baptist Church of Lewiston. She was second county runner-up. 1 YVONNE MITCHELL “Miss Lewiston” 1 • New Equipment Installed Students in the nationally recognized School of Graphic Arts at Chowan help with the assembling of a new printing unit installed on the school’s web offset press. The new printing unit, made available to the college by the Chowan Graphic Arts Foundation, Inc., will give the press capabilities to reproduce full-color photographs as well as “spot color.” The full color pictures reproduced in this edition of THE CHOWANIAN were printed on the three-unit press, and the photographs were “separated” in the printing school. The $21,000 addition will afford the school opportunities to teach the entire process of color reproduction. I Student Wives Entertained Chowan College Women and Wives Club sponsored an “uncola” party September 7 for wives of students.
