Parker Joins Art Faculty A man who lived in Melbourne, Australia from 1965 to 1969, David W. Parker, has been hired as Chowan College’s first full-time professor of commercial art within the division of art in the Fine Arts Department. A native of Washington, D. C., Parker received the A.A. from Campbell College, A.B. in commercial art and M.F.A. in printmaking and painting from E^st Carolina University. He also graduated from the ^ondary Teachers’ College in Melbourne, Australia and took advanced drawing one year from the National Gallery Art School in Melbourne. His experience includes work with two advertising firms, Creative Graphics, in Raleigh, where he was a commercial artist, and Newport Sign and Advertising Co. in Rocky Mount. For four years, he was a high school art teacher in Melbourne, Australia. He comes to Chowan afier teaching high school art in Greenville for one year. His hobbies are hunting, ftshing, collecting artifacts, and tennis. Parker, 33, is married. New Security Officer Named Chowan College has selected Fuel H. Atkinson, 30, of Ahoskie as its chief security officer. He replaces Billy Graham, who recently resigned to assume the position of Chairman of the School of Police Science at the TVi-County Technical Institute in Pendleton. Atkinson, a native of Arkansas, GREECE'S COASTLINE Mainland and island shores give Greece a coastline of almost 9,400 miles—the longest of any European country. POPULATION UP By 1980, North Carolina should have a population of 5,645,341; an 11.1 per cent increase from 1970. MINIMUM AGE In the United States Congress, a Representative must be at least 25 years old; a Senator, 30. served six years as a member of the Greenville Police Depart ment before accepting a similar position in Ahoskie in January 1973. He resigned in April and since then has been associated with Blanchard Office Supply in Ahoskie. Atkinson served five years in the United States Marine Corps. He has had extensive training in all phases of criminology at Carteret, Wilson, and Pitt Technical Institutes. He also completed a two-year home study in scientific crime detection from the Institute of Applied Science ir Chicago, ni. and a study in alcohol, tobacco, and firearms from the Department of Treasury. Atkinson is a member of Greenville Moose Lodge and lists his hobbies as golf, football, baseball and other sports. YEARBOOK ASSOCIATE EDITOR— Recently appointed to the position of Associate Editor of The Chowanoka, Chowan’s yearbook, is Dawn Bell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert B. BeU of Columbia, Maryland. The new editor is plictured as she looks over last year’s publicatiwi and makes plans for the current year. % & NEW PROFESSOR—Miss Marianne Pugh, of Camden, began her duties as a professor of graphc arts at the begin ning of the current academic year. She is pictured operating a new typesetting machine recently installed in the School of Graphic Arts, and she is one of the very few women in the United States to hold teaching positions in the field of newspaper production. The new teacher holds degrees from Chowan College and Arkansas State University and has work experience on several state newspapers. SPEAKER — Dr. Charles Petty, director of the Council on Christian Life of the North Carolina Baptist State Convention, delivers the fall convocation address in Chowan’s stadium.
