What do the Good Samaritan and the
“indispensible Dad” have in common?
While some fathers might be tempted to
draw many parallels, both are the
respective subjects of recent books by
Board retirees Robert L. Middleton and
William Hall Preston.
Middleton’s latest book. The Gift of
Love, is “full of devotional thoughts,
personal insights, and stories that
illustrate the kind of love shown by the
Gk)od Samaritan on the Jericho Road,”
Middleton explained.
The author, who admits that this book
holds special significance for him, hopes
that The Gift of Love“will create an at
mosphere of worship within the reader.”
And for Preston, Fathers Are Special is
a “partial response to the desperate need
in our homes for the ‘indispensible Dad.’ ”
When the book was released April 1, a
lifelong dream to write a book about
fathers came true for him.
Fathers Are Special, based on the
lofty ideals of the author’s own father, is
an “anthology of verse and prose, of
humor and pathos,” which Preston hopes
wUl speak to the hearts of its readers.
“As a son, as a father, and now as a
grandfather, I take pleasure in presenting
these ideals and claims of Christian
fatherhood to the average American
home,” Preston said.
Published by Broadmem Press, Mid
dleton’s book was released in 1975 and
Preston’s book will be available this
month. Preston is “particularly excited”
that his book is Broadman’s selecticm as
the Father’s Day gift book for 1977.
Both Middleton and Preston have
written previously. Middleton, who
describes his writing as “inspirational,” is
the author of such books as My Cup
Runneth Over, Don't Disappoint GodI,
Youth's Talents for Christ, and The Ac
cents of Life.
His writing grew out of work in the
diurch, so his early books were directed to
youth, the age group he worked with for 14
years. Many of his later books have been
geared to adults.
Preston is the author of God Has
Something Great for You and Church
Loyalty. Also, while on the staff in the
Board’s Student Department, he wrote
numerous pamphlets on denominational
programs and work.
It is not unusual to see either man
visiting friends at the Board. Middleton,
who was chief accountant and supervisor
of the Accounting Department for 29
years and director of the Business Division
for eight more years before his 1962
retirement, usually comes to the Board
about once a month. Preston, who retired
in 1964 after 37% years as staff associate in
the Student Department, also enjoys
keeping in touch with employees and other
retirees.
Middleton and his wife, Sarah, have a
Nashville ap>artment and are members of
First Baptist Church. Preston and his wife,
