By Exchange Club Mrs. Mixon Presented Deeds Award Mrs. Daisy Lou Mixon was honored with the Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds Award recently at the club's annual banquet. The honoree is chairman of the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Chowan College. In presenting the plaque, Joe Dickerson recounted the many areas of her life where she serves others. In 1970, she presented the keynote address to the Baptist State Convention in Greensboro, one of the few women so honored. In 1954 and 1971, the college yeartxjok was dedicated to her, and in 1975, she received a full-page tribute. Excellence in Teaching Award Mrs. Mixon has earned the Excellence in Teaching Award, and has twice served as chairman of the Institutional Self-Study which is required by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. A member of the Murfreesboro Baptist Church, she teaches a Women s Bible Class and has served on the church pulpit committee. The award recipient has many times been called upon to present book reviews, speak on topics in the field of religion and teach countless numbers of Bible and mission studies in Virginia and North Carolina. Often recognized for her scholarship and leadership, she has served both as secretary and president of the North Carolina Teachers of Religion, been a trustee of the WML) Training School of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and is active in the American Academy of Religion, Society of Biblical Literature, Southern Baptist Professor of Religion and N. C. Baptist Professors of Religion. Widow of Former President Mrs. Mixon came to Chowan Colleges with her husband. Dr. F. O. Mixon, when he became president of the institution in 1951, a position he held until his death in 1956. She is the mother of two children. Forest Orion Mixon, Jr., a research scientist at the Research Triangle Institute at Chapel Hill; and Dr. Lynn Mixon Hale, a physician in Winston-Salem. The award is presented each year by the club to honor a citizen for their contributions and service to the community. The religion professor was educated at Winthrop College where sh received the Bachelor of Arts degree, and at Southem Baptist Theologica Seminary, which granted her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Religio Education. She has studied additional at New Yori University and Unio Theological Seminary, also in New York. Loves Young People At the conclusion of his presentation, Dickerson said, “Behind all she doe is her love for young people. She is sought by Chowan's students for her wis counsel and appreciated for her own mind, patience, encouragement, sense of humor, zeal and because she is modest, unassuming, energetic efficient. “In the classroom she is always a teacher — demanding, inspirin stimulating. Her profound understanding of the Bible, her person commitment to its teachings, and her own love of learning permeate th classroom. In her own life she demonstrates the principles of the Christia faith she teaches so well. "Mrs. Mixon has dedicated her life to her Lord, church, community, fam and Chowan College. Her services has been totally unselfish and witho thought of any benefit or reward for herself. " The awardee was presented with a plaque and a framed copy of th resolution honoring her. In addition, her photograph and a scroll will be placed in Murfreestx)ro's Roberts-Vaughan House beside other holders of tl Golden Deeds title. Weekend Hours As an energy-saving measure, Chowan College is closing most of its ad ministrative offices on Saturday mor nings. President, Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker, announced that beginning April 1, ad ministrative offices will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Presently, the offices open at 8:30 a.m. and are open on Saturday mornings. The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees authorized the change, which was recommended by college energy task force. The exception to the new schedule will be the switchboard, admissions office, and athletic department which will remain open on Saturday mornings, the president said. In addition, all offices will be open on special occasions such as Parents’ Day, Homecoming, Spring Festival, and the opening of a given semester. Dr. Whitaker said the new schedule will lead to the conserving of energy, both heating and air-conditioning.
