Festival of Bands, Gridiron
Victory at Homecoming
Beautiful fall weather, the visit of alum
ni, and a victory on the gridiron were
among the highlights Oct. 22 when Chowan
celebrated 1977 Homecoming activities
with a Festival of Marching Bands, alumni
luncheon, and the selection of a Homecom
ing Queen and Freshman Princess.
Eleven marching bands from 10 cities in
two states competed during the morning
hours at the Festival of Marching Bands.
Participating were bands from Ahoskie,
Murfreesboro, Windsor, Williamston,
Vanceboro, Manteo, Washington, Rober-
sonvUle, Currituck, Barco and Suffolk, Va.
Competition among the various bands
was divided into two classes, one for bands
of fewer than 65 playing members, and the
other for groups of 65 or more. Taking top
honors in the Class A group was Currituck
High School, of Barco, in first place;
Nansemond-Suffolk Academy of Suffolk,
Va., second John Yeats High School in
third place.
In Class AA, Washington Senior High
School claimed the first place trophy, with
Williamston High School in the runner up
position, and Ahsokie High School taking
third place. Washington Senior High
School’s group took first place honors in
the marching, competition in both
classifications.
In the smaller classifications,
Washington Senior High School claimed
top honors with both their rifle corps and
flag bearers. Williamston High's majoret
tes and drum major were selected as tops.
Presenting the entertainment during
halfttme of the football contest, and
selected as “Band of the Day” was Cur
rituck High School’s marching band from
Barco.
The festival of Marching Bands,
scheduled to be an annual affair, was
under the direction of professor Bob
Brown, of the college’s Department of
Fine Arts.
Braves Stop New Yorkers
On the gridiron, the Chowan Braves
defeated a tough squad from Hudson
Valley College of Troy, N.Y. in a Coastal
Conference game, holding the New
Yorkers scoreless for a 37-0 win. The
stands were packed for the annual classic,
and the Braves were able to improve their
national ranking.
During halftime ceremonies. President
Bruce E. Whitaker crowned Mary C. Over
man of Edenton, Homecoming Queen for
1977. Claiming honors as Freshman
Princess was Carrie Michelle Pitman, a
pre-education major from Virginia Beach,
Va.
Other members of the Homecoming
Court are Freshmen Pamela Coley of
Rocky Mount; Kimberly Ann Brewer,
Macclesfield; and Denise Jewel Austin, of
Hatteras. Sophomore court members were
Ginny Raye Wurst, Cary; Mary Jeanne
Ranslem, Puerto Rico; and Peggy Anne
McElmore, of Richmond, Va.
Following the football game. Alpha Pi
Epsilon, national honorary society for
secretarial students, held a reunion for
former members at the “Friendly Place,”
in front of Carrie Savage Camp Hall, the
college’s new science-engineering facility.
