BDLLCOWPER Cowper A ttends Annual National Student Meeting Bill Cowper of Gatesville was one of 545 students from every state except Alaska wah attended the recent Ninth Annual Na tional Student Symposium in Washington, D.C. sponsored by the Center of the Study of the Presidency. Cowper was recommended by Mrs. Rachel Pittman, Professor of his govern ment course at Chowan College. This is the first time Chowan had been invited to send a student. Cowper said most of the students were upperclassmen and graduate students with Ivy League schools well represented among other leading col leges and universities. The topic of the three-day symposium was “The Dilemmas of Shared Power and Divided Government.” The keynote ad dress was given by Patrick Moynihan, United States Senator (D.) from New York. “I enjoyed the program a great deal," commented Cowper. “I found the discus sion groups very interesting. We discussed such topics as economics, defense, foreign policy and energy.” Cowper is a pre- ministerial student. Braves Place In Tounament Chowan College lost its lead over the final two events as Brevard College defeated the Braves, 116-92, to win the Region 10 track championship. Paced by its sprinters, Chowan wcm four of the first five events. Chowan won all three dashes, the 100,220, and 440, and the 440-yard relay to build an early lead over perennial champion Brevard. Chowan swept the first three places in both the 100 and 220. Gerald Wright won the 100 in 9.4, a regimal record. Ridcy Spruill captured the 220 in 22.1 while Kevan Radcliffe won the 440 in 51.2. The 440 relay team (tf Spruill, Ricardo TbKi4>- son, Vernon Morrison a^ Wright woa in 42.31. Danny Days to(A the only other first in the shot put with a heave of 43.7*25. Trailing by one point, 83-82, Brevard rallied to win the triple junq> and pole vault for the victory. Lees-McRae was third with 32 points followed by Wmg»te with 18 and Ferrum with 11.
