Four Hold Ph.D. Six New Professors Join Chowan Staff Chowan opened the 1978-79 academic year in August with six new professors in the fields of photography, English, drama, business, social science, Spanish and French. The new professor in the Departments ot Business and Social Science is Dr. Dennis Frederick SchilL Schill holds a B.S. in econemics and M.B.A. in bosbiess frocn Tampa University, M.A. and Ph.D. in palitica) science from Tulane University. He recewed the Wall Street Jnmel Awmtas the outstanding stu dent in econoiBics and hnsinpM at the University of Tampa is 19S5, his senior year. For two years, Schill served as assistant professor of public administration at Old Dominion University. At ODU, he assisted in the creation of a masters degree program in public ad ministration, including creation of core courses and areas of specialization. His wife is a physician in Rocky Mount. Spanish, French Professor Dr. Fleming G. Vinson is serving as professor of Spanish and French in the Department of Languages and Literature. He received his A.B., magna cum laude, and M.A., both in Spanish, from the University of Georgia. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill granted him the Ph.D. in Romance Languages. Vinson has served for the past five years as associate pro fessor at The College of Charleston. Prior to that, he was associate professor at Western Carolina University. He also has served as instructor at UNC-CH; instructor and language laboratory director. University of Georgia. The new professor of Spanish and French is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and the author of numerous papers on Romance Language subjects. He has received three post-doctoral grants to conduct seminars and research. Dr. Ramsey Joins Faculty Dr. William McCrea Ramsey is serving as professor of English. He received his B.S. from Bates College, and M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. From 1969-71, he was an instructor at Sullins College, Bristol, Va., in freshman English and appreciation of Black Literature; humanities; and director of Independent Studies in Creative Writing, Naturalism, and Black Autobiography. Ramsey has served in two faculty positions at UNC-CH. From 1973-77, he was a teaching assistant in freshman composition. During the 1977-78 year, he was an instructor in American Literature, contemporary literature, and freshman composi tion. New Drama Professor Mrs. Sandra N. Boyce is serving as professor of English and drama. She attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and received her B.A. and M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has taught at Holmes High School in Edenton, College of the Albemarle, Appalachian State University and UNC-CH. Mrs. Boyce has been active in the Edenton Little Theatre and has taught several workshops in speech and drama for the North Carolina Speech and Drama Association. Two New Photography Professors Serving as professors of photography in the Department of Graphic Arts and Photography are Douglas L. Gleason and Richard T. McKay. Gleason received his B.A. with honors from the University of South Florida in Tampa and M. A. from the University of Florida. He also is a graduate and former instructor of the photography program at Randolph Technical Institute, Asheboro. Gleason served with the 19th Air Force TAC as information specialist and was responsible for the distribution of news and photography at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. He has also served on the faculty at Lenior Com munity College, Kinston, and assumed an active role in the col lege’s public relations effort. Before coming to Chowan, Gleason was an advertising photographer with one of the nation’s largest commercial photography and printing companies. McKay, a Marion, Va., native, comes to Chowan from a posi tion as staff photographer and picture editor for the Shelby Dai ly Star. He has also served on the photography staff of the Raleigh News and Observer. His experience includes service as a photo lab technician and photo librarian assistant with the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in Atlanta. For three years, he worked on the staff of the Atlanta Seminar on Photojournalism. McKay received the A.A. from E)eKalb College, Atlanta, Ga., and bachelor of journalism from the University of Missouri.
