Homecoming
Record Attendance Marks ''Big Day";
Joanne Collins Crowned Queen for 1978
A festival of marching bands, an alumni
luncheon, and the traditional homecoming
football classic, were highlights of Chowan’s
1978 Homecoming festivities in early October.
Preceding the grid classic in early afternoon,
Miss Joanne Collins, a liberal arts major
from Clifton, Va., was crowned 1978
Homecoming Queen, with Miss Terri Calfee
of Newport News, Va., receiving honors as
freshman princess.
Eleven high school bands from 10 cities
competed for honors during the morning
hours in the annual Festival of Marching
Bands, sponsored by the college’s Depart
ment of Fine Arts.
Claiming honors as “Band of the Day” and
also first place trophies in the Class AA divi
sion, was Washington High School’s marching
band of Washington, N. C. Taking top honors
in the Class A division was Currituck High
School band.
The annual luncheon for alumni was held in
the President’s Dining Room of Thomas
Cafeteria at mid-day, with a large number of
graduates returning to their alma mater for
the special day.
Braves Defeated
The Braves football squad, with an
undefeated record and ranked 8th in the na
tion, met arch rival Ferrum College on the
gridiron in early afternoon before a standing-
room-only crowd of spectators. In a hard-
fought contest the Ferrum Panthers scored a
17-16 victory to hand the Braves their first
defeat of the season.
Royal Ambassador boys from area Baptist
churchers were guests at the game, after at
tending a morning program on campus which
was co-sponsored by the college and the
Brotherhood Department of the Baptist State
Convention.
In addition to Queen Joanne Collins and
Princess Terri Calfee, other members of the
Homecoming Court were sophomores Jen
nifer Watts of Fayetteville; Dee Christopher
of Seaford, Del.; and Debra McCraw of
Whiteville.
Freshman members of the court were Julie
Farrar of Wilmington; Dianne Palmer of
Fayetteville; and Lissa Frye of Fairmont.
