Alumni Happenings Honored by Students Honors Day brought an unexpected surprise for Dr. R. Horgus Taylor, chaploin. He learned the students had dedicated the annual, the CHOWANOKA, to him. He is congratulated by President Bruce Whitaker and the annual's associate editor, Scott White. He came to Chowan in 1963. Class of 1914 Mrs. Mary Alston Keeter lives in Kings Mountain, N.C. She has one daughter, Mrs. D. F. Hord of Kings Mountain, and a son, Randolph Madison, of Petersburg, Va. Class of 1933 Mrs. Doris Lawrence Stephenson lives in Severn, N. C. She has a daughter, Mrs. Gary Ray of Wilson, and one son, Joseph, who is professor of piano at Auburn University, Auburn, Ala. Class of 1934 Mrs. Hazel Britton was recently named “Woman of the Year” by the Ahoskie Woman’s Club. Class of 1937 Janice Jenkins Corbus is Director of Social Services at Childrens Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, Va. She is married to Claud Corbus and they reside in Norfolk. Class of 1957 Sarah Virginia Parker is serving as secretary to the Consul General at the American Consulate General in Johan nesburg, South Africa. Other assignments, since joining the Foreip Service in 1970, have been in Tegucigalpa, Honduras; Geneva, Switzerland; Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; and Washington, D.C. Class of 1960 John Lawrence Hamilton is president of Hamilton-Lloyds in Columbia, S.C., and lives in Columbia. Class of 1961 Billy Howell serves as director of the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services for the Quad County Counseling Center in Princeton, 111. Richard L. Thompson received his doctor of education degree from UNC-G in June. He is principal at Cabarrus High School in Concord, N.C. He and his wife, Susan Dixon Thompson, have two children, Tara and Whitnie. Wayne Cosby is onex)f eight coaches in the country to be named “Coach of the Year” by the National Athletic Coaches Assoc, In recognition of. his selection for the honor, Cosby (a former “Coach of the Year” in Virginia) received a plaque at the NHSACA convention Clinic held in Orlando, Fla., in June. Cosby is head football coach of the Southampton Indians and lives in Franklin, Va. Nancy Harper was recently appointed coordinator of Community School Use in Warren County. She is the wife of Rev. Jerry E. Harper, Sr. (’63) of Littleton, N.C. Class of 1964 Ellen Cortell Parker is married to James Edwin Parker and they reside in La Grange, N.C. She teaches at Southwood Elementary School and he is employed by the N.C. Dept, of Transportation. Class of 1967 Gerald Edward Matthews, Sr. and his wife, Elizabeth, live in Angler, N.C., where he is in the restaurant business. She teaches fourth grade at Fuquay Elementary School. Class of 1968 Capt. James S. Wells and his wife are parents of a son, Michael James Wells, bom Dec. 10, 1978. They reside in Honolulu, Hawaii. William F. Schwartz was recently pro moted to secretary and treasurer of Atlantic Rural Expostion, Inc., which owns and operates the State Fair of Virginia. He and his wife liye in Ashland, Va., and have one daughter, Jennifer. Martha Doughtie Cavanaugh lives in Winston Salem, where she works in the North American office of Westland Aircraft Ltd. Class of 1969 Harvey Taylor, his wife, Helen, and their son, James Wagnor, reside in Deep Run, N.C. Harvey is associated with the Caswell Center in Kinston. Michael McCrae Gums is employed as production superintendent at Southern Case, Inc. of Raleigh. His wife, Gloria Smith Gums, works for the State of North Carolina in the Dept, of Natural Resources and Com munity Development. They live in Raleigh, N.C. Mimi Rumley is married to Neal Par- trick, Jr., who is a senior in the Law School of Wake Forest University. Lewis Hastie has been named a recreation therapist at Tidewater Psychiatric In stitute, Virginia Beach, Va. He Uves in Norfolk. Robert P. Capel and his wife, Helen, reside in Ahoskie where he is assistant vice president of the branch office of Carolina Production Credit Assoc. They have two children, Robert and Melissa. Diane Couch Stoner is employed by the Norfolk Health Dept, as a registered nurse in public health nursing. Her husband, Ray, is a chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy. For the past five years, Patrick Dudley Neal has served as pastor of Browns Baptist Church, Rt. #2, Norlina, N.C. He and his wife, Diane Gardner Neal, have two sons, Patrick Gardner and Matthew Dudley. Class of 1970 Thomas E. Neal, III, and his wife Betsy Brewer Neale, have one son, Ted. Tom is manager of Moe Levy’s in Columbia, S.C., where they live. Class of 1972 Charles H. Watson, Jr. (’72) and his wife Vicky Mann Watson (’71) have one daughter, Carrie. He is associate director of development at Chowan College and Vicky teaches at Holland Primary School, Suffolk Va. William, “Bill”, Twine, representative for the Mutual Security Life Insurance Com pany, has been recognized by his company for outstanding leadership in the life in surance business. He is associated with the Ray Stiles and Associates Agency of Nor folk, Va. Margaret Snipes Bost is married to Danny Ray Bost. He is employed by Carolina Power and Light Co. and she works at the University of North Carolina School of Phar macy. They live in Pittsboro, N.C. Thomas Maxwell McNear is a lieutenant in military intelligence and is stationed at Ft. Richardson, Alaska. He and his wife, Faye, have two children, Carrie and Erin. Edward W. Fairless has been named assistant cashier of the Beaufort office of Branch Banking and Trust Co. He and his wife, Bonnie l^ane Fairless, have one son. Steven Conklin Flint and his wife, Ginny Faye Boyer Flint, reside in Mebane, N.C. He is employed by Glen Raven Mills in Burl ington, and she works for Biomedical Reference Laboratories, Inc. Ragan Stroup has been appointed a proba tion and parole officer in Henderson county. She lives in Hendersonville, N.C. Class of 1973 Freddy M. Knight and his wife, Rhonda, live at Myrtle Beach, S.C. He is a distributor for Oliver Distributing Co. and she is a nurse at Grand Strand General Hospital. Rita Diane Murray Benson is a medical secretary at Duke Medical Center. Her hus band, Robert, serves as assistant credit manager at Termplan, Inc. They reside in Durham, N.C. Susan Kathleen Fulcher Spaulding works at Duke University Medical Center. She and her husband, Larry Alan, live in Durham. He works at Sperry Rand Corp. John C. Tope (’73) and Vanessa D. Tope (’73) are parents of a son, Pasha Matthew, born January 16, 1979. They live in Millersburg, Ohio, where John is a partner in Tope Village Printing. Frances Marion Beeks Carlton and her husband, Richard, reside in Lancaster, S.C. They have a daughter, Jennie Leigh. The Myers-Briggs is a forced-choiced questionnaire designed t(/ identify psychological types ac cording to the theory of C. G. Jung. "Results of the Myers-Briggs,” said Dean Lewis, are helpful to students as they consider their strengths and weaknesses and their values and interests. " All first-time students who enroll ed during 1978-79 were given an opportunity to respond to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.
