% Assisting College Efforts Judy Andrassy of Virginia Beach has assisted Chowan in forming an arrangement with a Virginia bank to channel financial support and real estate gifts to the college from Virginia benefactors. This agreement will permit Chowan benefactors to have a Trust ad ministered in Virginia, while having a trust income transfered annually to the college. Its best application will be by virtue of the management of certain Vil-ginia real estate which benefactors might give or devise for the benefit of the college to be held for a term of years or in perpetuity, Francis noted. Bobby Cross, director of development, said that this arrangement will be most useful because of the higtt concentration of Chowan students, alumni and friends in Tidewater Virginia. Approximately 30% of the student body comes from Virginia. Chowan College has entered into an arrangement with the Bank of Virginia Trust Company that it would act as trustee of certain Trust assets and real estate that its Virginia benefactors may from time to time give or devise for the benefit of the college. The arrangement was developed by Judy Andrassy, president of Judy Andrassy Realty, Virginia Beach, a member of the Advisory Board. William Petroff and William Moorhouse, vice presidents of Bank of Virginia Trust Company, and John P. Matson, assistant vice president and commercial office for Bank of Virginia, are encouraged by this arrangement that opens up a new dimension for philanthropists and for the Bank of Virginia Trust Company. Gilbert W. The college operated in the black for the 21st consecutive year. Chowan also surpassed its Annual Giving Program goal of $65,000. Chowan has operated in the black since 1957-58, Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker’s second year as president. He began his 23rd year as president in May. The success of the Annual Giving Program in 1978-79 was an important reason income exceeded expenses. Contributions to the program for daily operating expenses totaled $67,306.26. Henry Johnson, Jr., of Hamilton, served as chairman of the Annual Giving Program. Chowan’s alumni made an important contribution to the success of the Annual Giving Program. During 1978-79, they increased their support to the college. Alumni contributed a record $15,007, an increase of over $5,000 from the previous year. In addition, 99 more alumni made contributions, lifting the total to 365. Leadership for the Alumni Giving Program was given by Edgar Parker, president of the Alumni Association, and Garland “Bucky” Waters, alumni giving chairman. West Va. Tech Signs Williams Ronald Williams of Willard, a sophomore at Chowan, has signed a grant-in-aid to play basketball for West Virginia Tech University, beginning in the fall, at the Montgomery, W. Va., campus. A 20-year old, the 6’5” 210-lb. forward averaged 24 points per game and 12 rebounds his senior year at Union High Summer Missionary^ Eric Del Santo, a Chowan student, is serving as a Southern Baptist Home Mission Board summer missionary in North Carolina this summer. A total of 1,491 students appointed through the Home Mission Board and Baptist Student Unions are participating in the 10- week program for college students, sup^ plementing the efforts of missionaries and churches. Del Santo is from New London. For July. 1979 School under coach Nathan Gay. He was recognized as an All-Sencland selection, representing the immediate Wilmington area. He was named to the East Waccamaw all-conference team, and selected as a first team member among the 2-A All-East team. Williams played his last two years at Chowan where he was an All-Eastern Tarheel choice. The Braves enjoyed two undefeated conference championships with his leadership. “I think Ronald’s reached about 60 per cent of his full potential,” noted coach Jerry Smith. Two years ago “he was raw talent; he’s more mature right now.” Smith added. “Now he can play with anybody.” “I think Ronald will definitely start at West Virginia Tech, and he’ll probably make all-conference his first year.” Tech plays in one of the rougher NAIA conferences in the country. Bolton No Year Miss Sarah Jenkins Vaughan Mrs. Maebelle Ward Cooke Grad Named To Bank Post RICHMOND, VA. — The executive committee of Central National Bank has announced the election of Chowan alumnus William E. Melton to assistant vice president. He is manager of the Eastgate branch. He is a member of the Class of 1962. Melton joined the bank in August, 1975 as manager of Interport branch and was elected branch officer that same month. Transferred to his current position in April, 1977, he now has managerial responsibilities for the Eastgate Annex and Interport facilities. Prior to joining CNB, Melton worked for two local financial institutions. He received a Bachelor of Conrmierce Degree from the University of Richmond in 1970.
