Dr. Rachel Davis,

Chowan College advisor, Dr. Rachel
Darden Davis, 74, noted Lenoir County
physician and former member of the North
Carolina General Assembly, died Oct. 10,
1979, at Lenoir Memorial Hospital following
a long battle with cancer.
Dr. Davis was bom Sept. 24, 1905,
daughter of Hubert and Harriet Rachel Isler
Davis of the Moss Hill section of Lenoir
County.
After graduating from Salem College in
Winston-Salem, she worked as a teacher in
Lenoir County schools and performed mis
sionary work in Alaska during the summer
months. In addition, she took graduate
courses at the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill in preparation for medical
school.
After receiving a master of science
degree in food science from Columbia
University, she entered the Woman’s
Medical College of Philadelphia in 1928 and
was awarded a doctor of Medicine degree in
1932, specializing in obstetrics and
gynecology. She returned to Kinston and
opened her first practice on Aug. 4,1933.
She was elected to the North Carolina
General Assembly in 1959 and represented
Lenoir County in the 1959,1961 and 1963 ses
sions. Dr. Davis expressed a particular in
terest in education and served as vice-
chairman of the Education Committee. She
also served as a trustee of the University of
North Carolina, advisor to the trustees at
Chowan College, and member of the Ex
ecutive Board of the North Carolina
Association of Community Colleges.
Survivors include a daughter. Mrs. Hugh
Wilde of Kinston four brothers, John S.
Davis of Kinston, Roland S. Davis and W
Edwin Davis of Severn Springs and Fred C.
Davis of Newport News, Va.; and five
grandchildren

Choir Scheduled
For TV Performance

The Chowan College Choir, along with
other colleges and choral groups from
Washington, NC area, will tape 30 minutes
of Christmas music to be aired on Christmas
Day on WITN-TV at 3 p.m., according to Dr.
James M. Chamblee, Chairman of the
Department of Music.
The choir and concert band will perform
on December 4 at 8 p.m. in the Columns
Auditorium. The Christmas concert will be
free to the public.
Singer Sunny Van Eaton will appear at
Daniel Hall on December 2 at 4 p.m. She will
be accompanied by Professor High Mid
dleton on the piano.
Colliers Living in Greenville
Mr. and Mrs. Randy Collier, ’70, (former
(Jene Brister ’69) live in Greenville where
Randy teaches in the Business Department
of J. H. Rose High School. Gene is head
secretary for the Chemistry Department,
East Carolina University in Greenville.
They have one son, Ryan Lee, who is two
years old. Randy recently completed his
Masters degree in Business Education at
ECU.

2nd National Phonofhon Scheduled
In response to the challenge of the ever increasing need
of additional alumni support, the Board of Directors of the
Chowan College Alumni Association Is again sponsoring a
phonothon campaign to secure the necessary alumni par
ticipation to achieve this year's Alumni Annual Giving Goal
of $18,000 from 425 alumni. A group of volunteers—alumni,
students, faculty—will be placing calls to Chowan alumni
during the new year. As president of the Alumni Association,
I personally wont to urge you to respond favorably when you
are called. Chowan College needs your support if it is to con
tinue its tradition as one of the nation's best two year institu
tions of Christian higher education.
