Remembers
Chowan Days
For December, 1979
Editor’s note: We are proud to share this
letter from a Chowan College alumnus,
Class of 1972, William H. Parker, now of
Gardena, Califomia.
Dear Sir:
I have received, with interest, The Chowa-
nian, for several years now. I graduated
from Chowan in the spring of 1972. I have
read with special interest the “Alumni
News” and “Alumni Happenings” columns.
I believe the early progress and success
achieved by Chowan graduates, as in
dicated by your publication, signify the
value of education, as evidenced at Chowan.
From a personal viewpoint, I appreciated
the faculty and staff’s courtesy and atten
tion while I was a student at Chowan. I found
the courses offered challenge and
substance, if the student but tried. I noticed,
however, that most of the alumni articles
referenced graduates settling in the
southeast (N.C., S.C., Virginia, especially).
I thought that I would give you some in
formation on a graduate who settled outside
the southeast.
I arrived at Chowan for the summer term
of 1970.1 attended classes for 2 summer ses
sion, a year of normaUy scheduled classes,
and another summer term. I then transfer
red from the Pre-Engineering curriculum at
Chowan to the Electrical Engineering cur
riculum at N.C. State. I transferred credits
back to Chowan from NCSU, and graduated
from Chowan in 1972, then from State in
1973. My best memories of Chowan were
generated by Phyllis Dewar, George
Hazelton, Professor Pruette, and Mr. Col
lins. AU of the former helped me in studies
or in work to support myself and my wife,
and Mr. Collins treated me with respect and
courtesy when I applied for a student loan. I
also remember Dr. Whitaker with fondness.
Chowan is assuredly blessed to have such a
dedicated, hard driving individual at the
helm”.
After graduation from NCSU, I moved to
Gardena, Califomia, just outside Los
Angeles. I found engineering work at
Genisco Technology Corporation, in Comp
ton Calofornia. My original job in August of
1973 was design engineer for elec
tromagnetic interference power line filters.
Since that time, I have been promoted to
manager of the electromagnetic in
terference engineering services group.I
have remained active in professional
societies. I am a consulting member of the
SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers), in
volved in a project with the AE-4 subcom
mittee to revise present military elec
tromagnetic interference (“EMI”) test
methods. I am vice^hairman for 1979-80 for
the Los Angleses chapter of the Elec
tromagnetic Aompatibility Society of the
IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Elec
tronics Engineers, I am a member of the na
tional Administrative Committee for the
Emc Society of The IEEE. I was elected to
that tfiree- year term in 1978. I have
presented one technical paper on EMI
filters (Washington, D.C., 1976), and will
present part of a tutorial session in San
Diego in October of this year.
While attending NCSU, I passed my
“EIT” (Engineer-in-Training) exam, and
after 2 years of engineering experience in
California, I took and passed the Califomia
State “P.E.’’(Professional Engineer) ex
am. I am now a registered professional
engineer in Califomia.
My wife, daughter, and I are presently
residing in Gardena, Califomia, about 10
miles due east of the beaches. My mother
and two of my brothers reside in Enfield,
North Carolina. My mother is Virginia Neill
Parker at 122 Railroad Street in Enfield.
I apologize for giving you such a long let
ter to read, but I wanted to let you know
what has happened to one “out-of-stater”
who attended Chowan. As for the Chowa-
nian, please keep sending it. May God con
tinue to bless you and all the other faculty
and staff at Chowan.
Sincere regards,
William H. Parker
