Members of Class of '71 Continue in Nursing Careers

and Julia Cole Lowe have prepared a
newsletter for the Chowan College nursing
class of 1971 and their instructors. The
following information is reprinted from the
newsletter. We would like to thank the co
editors for sharing the information with the
readers of the CHOWANIAN.
JENNIFER AMENT
Poquoson, Virginia
Jennifer is presently living and working in
Richmond. She worked on a medical-
surgical unit at Rex Hospital in Raleigh
form 1971 to 1973. She then moved to Hamp
ton, Virginia and began working at
Bayberry Hospital in the alcohol rehabilita
tion program. In 1974 and 1975, she attended
the Johns Hopkins University regional
training program for alcohol counselors in
Baltimore. She also took mental health
courses at the Community College- of
Baltimore. Following graduation from
Johns Hopkins, she worked as an alcohol
counselor for the state of Virginia at Norfolk
Alcohol Services until 1978. She was then
hired on the alcohol treatment unit at the
Gulfport, Mississippi Veterans Administra
tion and wiLs recently transferred to the
Richmond Veterans Administration. Jen
nifer plans to continue her studies and
research in substance use and abuse and
also plans to get her B.S.N. She is single and
enjoys traveling and meeting people.
PRISCTLLA RENN BREWER
Elm City, North Carolina
Priscilla and her family have recently
moved from Goldsboro to Elm City, NorUi
Carolina. Her husband Douglas is an mter-
nist. They have two children: Katrina Carol,
who was three in June, and Jonatiian-
Douglas, who was one m April
GAIL POLLOCK CARDEN
Durham. North Carolina
Gail is unemployed now but plans to start
back to work when the children are in
school. Her husband Michael is a public
saftey sergeant. Their two children are:
Matthew Scott, bom May 17, 1974, and
Laura Michelle, bom November 25, 1975.
They also have two foster children. They
have been foster parents for three years and
have had eighteen foster children. Gail and
Mike built a new house in 1977 to 1978. They
did most of the work themselves, with the
help of the children.
ELLEN MATTHEWS GLOVER
Seaboard, North Carolina
Ellen is unemployed now but has worked
as a general staff nurse in a hospital, and of
fice nurse, and a public health nurse. She
helps Jimmie with the farm and is active in
church work. Ellen stays very busy with
their three children: Benjamin Ray (Ben-
jie), six, Melissa Diane, three-and-a-half,
and Adam Scott who will soon be one.
TERRY JOHNSON HARRINGTON
Rocky Mount, North Carolina
Terry is a program coordinator at Guar
dian Corporation. She works in quality
assurance as a consultant for all depart
ments for nineteen Guardian nursing
homes. Terry is also a senior in business ad
ministration at Wesleyan College. Her hus
band Benjamin is a special education
teacher and teaches the mentally retarded.
They have one son, Justin, who will be two
years old on October 6.
JUDY BOYD HOLLAND
Washington, North Carolina
Judy and her family left Bermuda in
March. She is now living in Washington,
North Carloina while her husband Waverly
is attending school in Alexandria, Virgina
for a year. Then they will go to California for

three to five years. Waverly is a construc
tion electrician in the Navy. Their first
child, Amanda Kaya (Mandy), was one year
old March 4. They are expecting another
child Seprember 4. WafQes, tiieir four year
old dog, is another loved member of their
family.
DARLENE (RONDEAU) LAFFERTY
BETTY SOWERS LONG
Winston Salem, North Carolina
Betty is an c^ce nurse for Drs. Ear
nhardt, Sayers, and Rodgers, a group of
pediatricians. She works with well and sick
children from newborn babies to sixteen
years old. Her nursing duties include im
munizations and some lab work. Needle
point and decapauge fill some of Betty’s free
time. Her husband E.J. is a programmer in
the systems department at Hanes Corpora
tion. Their daughter, Amy Elizabeth, two
years old, was bom November 9,1976.
JULIA COLE LOWE
Wakefield, Virginia
Julia is the Utilization Review Coor
dinator for Human Resources Institute. Her
direct responsibilities include complete and
accurate documentation for all charts in her
facility. Prior to this promotion she had
been the Charge Nurse for the Adolescent
Unit in the facility. She is still in Psychiatry
and anticipates ttiat she will remain in this
field. She resides with her parents.
JOCY ELLIS OVERBY
Crozet, Virginia
Joey is employed at the University of
Virginia. She works as a staff nurse in the
surgical intensive care unit. Joey also
spends time sewing and cross country ski
ing. Terry is an internist. They have two
childem: Michelle Lynn, seven, and Brian
Ellis, four.
MELBA FOWLER SHERRILL
Durham, North Carolina
Melba is an office nurse for Drs. Miller,
Buchanan, and Patterson, who si^ialize in
cardiovascular diseases. Her duties include
teaching diets, EXG’s, some lab work, and
also general office duties, including in
surance. Melba is the secretary of Lutheran
Women at St. Paul Lutheran Church and is
on the church council. Her son, Jason EM-
win, four years old, was bom April 10,1975.
JOAN (CLARK) SKES
Durham, North C^olina
Joan is a clinical instructor of OB-GYN at
Durham Technical Institute. She received a
B.S.N. in May from the University of Nortii
Carolina in Chapel Hill. Her husbwd Paul is
a design draftsman at Troxler Electronics
in the Research Triangle. Annette is fifteen,
Cheryl is twelve, and Angie is ten.
GAIL MELCHIORRE PARKER
Virginia Beach, Virginia
Gail is presently employed as a part-time
office nurse at Norfolk Diagnostic Clinic. It
is a private clinic \diich includes nineteen
internists, most with sub-specialities, and
two nurse practitioners. Gail worked part-
time with Dr. Eleanor littlepage in OB-
GYN fnHn 1972 untill Dr. Littlepage’s retire
ment in February of this year. Her husband
Carey is an as^stant treasurer of Home
Federal Savings and Loan Association,
where he worics in the accounting and data
processing departments. They have
onedaughter, Kimberly Dawn (Kim), who
will be five years old November 8.
MISS MARY CARPENTER
Tacomo, Washington
Since the Chowan Program she has been
teaching at Pacific Lutheran University
School oi Nursing at Tacomo, Washington
(near Seattle). Primarily responsible for
the maternity part of the cirriculum. She
purchased a tiny house in which she has just
added a large room and is enjoying fixing it
up.
