f n * Homecoming Queen Shigeko Wakiyama received congratulations from co captain Amos Twitty after being crowned by President Whitaker, whose smile of pleasure is exceeded by that of royal escort Mike Aroi. phoiobyT oudek Braves Stop Ferrum Panthers Homecoming 1980 Called 'Best Ever' By GREG BASSETT and NANCY KEEN Despite the chilly, rainy weather which forced the cancellaUon of some Friday night activities, most agree that Homecoming 1980 will rank as one of the best Homecom ings ever. “I think Homecoming was a total success, especially compared to last year,” said Parker Hall’s dorm council president Jeff Pishner. “It was by far the best and most exciting weekend this fall.” Parker Hall won the first place honors in the dormitory decoration competition. Pishner said that he and about ten other students worked day and night for two days putting together the decorations and ban ners that were featured throughout the dorm and at the game. Ms. Linda Owens, director of campus pro gramming, praised the work of the Parker residents as a “supreme group effort.” The weekend activities began Friday afternoon with “Anything Goes” competi tion on the center campus. Among the ac tivities were pie-eating contests, a turtle race, and a two-mile relay. Following “Anything Goes”, there was a banquet in the President’s Room to honor the Homecoming Court and invited guests. 4,000 Attend Game The football game saw upwards of 4,000 people jam the grandstands as the Braves rolled past arch-rival Ferrum by a score of 20-7, much to the delight of students and alumni. Coach Jim Garrison was carried around the field on the shoulders of his cheering players in a never-to-be-forgotten victory celebration. The 1980 Homecoming Court was termed “one of the prettiest ever” by a college of ficial. For the first time ever, a foreign stu dent won the coveted Queen title. 25th Homecoming Queen Shigeko Wakiyama, West Hall’s 20-year- old representative became Chowan’s 25th Homecoming Queen during halftime ceremonies. Miss Wakiyama, who received an enthusiastic response when she was in troduced to the crowd, was crowned by President Whitaker. Her escort was another native of Japan, Mike Arai, a resident of Parker Hall. Wendy Strickland, representing Belk Hall, won the Homecoming Princess title. The Delaware freshman was escorted by Chris Cresswell. Also during halftime, the entire Homecoming Court was introduced. The four sophomores and their escorts were Kathleen M. Bell, Lewisburg, Pa., and Jeff Cornatzer; Debbie Gorse, Harriman, N. Y., and Mitchell Underwood; Denise Reynolds, Virginia Beach, Va., and Perry Martin, Jr.; and Queen Shiegko, from Nagasaki, and Arai. The freshmen were: Krista Schleicher, Denville, N. J., and Bill Schelton; Angela Schenck, Newport News, Va., and Mark Pellechia; Sandy Spr ingfield, Myrtle Beach, S. C., and Jack Spellacy; and Princess Wendy, Milford, Del., and Creswell.
