Six Former Trustees Return For Another Term of Service Six members have served previously on the Board of Trustees and have returned for another term of service. They are Mrs. Maggie Boone Bridges of Jackson; John R. Jordan of Raleigh; the Rev. Joe David McLean of Jackson; H. Douglas White of Rocky Mount; Robert C. White of Windsor; and Edwin L. Williams of Kinston Mrs. Bridgers is active in the Creeksville Baptist Church where she is director of the WMU and a Sunday school teacher. She also has served as a youth leader and in many other leadership positions. She is a retired high school math teacher, having served at Jackson, Gates County, Seaboard and Northampton County schools. She is presently serving as a substitute teacher. Mrs. Bridgers has served Chowan as president (rf the Alumni Association and is currently a class chairman. She received the college’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1973. Mrs. Bridgers is active in community ser vice and is presently county co-chairman of the Heart Fund and vice chairman of Retired Teachers. She and her husband, J. Grady Bridgers, live in a home which is oyer 200 years old. They have one son, Lanny Boone Bridgers, who is a lawyer in Atlanta. Her hobbies include people, sports, reading, and “really living,” she reports. “I am having a good time,” she adds. MRS. MAGGIE B. BRIDGERS Mrs. Maggie Boone Bridgers of Jackson graduated from Chowan College when it was a four-year school. She is serving her fifth term as a trustee. Awards Presented In Fall Sports Chowan honored its student athletes who participated in football, women’s volleyball, and fall cheerleading with a banquet in the President’s Dining Room. The annual event, held a the conclusion of the fall semester, was attended by 140 student athletes. Head football coach Ed Emory of East Carolina University, banquet speaker, centered his remarks on the importance of self- motivation and the great opportunities af forded student athletes on junior college squads. Coaches Jim Garrison and Janet Collins and Cheerleader Sponsor Diane Wood presented certificates to athletes who let tered in each of the fall sports. Special awards presented to football players were: Outstanding offensive lineman—Jeff Speight of Wilson. Outstanding Defensive Lineman—Jody ^hulz of Chester, Md. Outstanding Defensive Back-Arthur Washington of College park, Md. Outstanding Linebacker—Mike Grant of Charleston, S. C. Outstanding Offensive Backs—William Dalton of Eden, and James Colege of Four Oaks. Women’s VoUeyball Awards were: Most Valuable Player—Terri Tyler of Raeford. Outstanding Defensive Player—Pam Pellomn of Wilmington. Outstanding Offen sive Player—Armelia Alexander of Oviedo, Florida. The special cheerleader awards will be given at the Spr ing Sports Banquet. Jordan, Jr. in Raleigh. This is his fourth term as a member of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Jordan is a graduate of Chowan and serves as a class chairman. He also graduated from the University of North Carolina with the bachelor of arts and doc tor of law degrees. Mr. Jordon served as a member of the North Carolina Senate for three regular ses sions and one special session. He is presently chairman of the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina. Mr. Jordan has served as chair man of the North Carolina State Board of Social Services and the Commission on Medical Aid for the Aged in North Carolina; member of the North Carolina State Board of Higher Education, and the Boards of Trustees of the Consolidated University of North Carolina. He has devoted many years of service in the health affairs including serving as presi dent or state chairman within the state organizations of the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Arthritis Foundation, and Society for Crippled Children and Adults. He has recieved many awards and honors in recognition of his service in health, legal, educational, civic, governmental and political fields. A member of Winton Baptist Church, Mr. Jordon also attends the First Baptist Church of Raleigh. Mr. Jordon is the great grandson of W. W. Mitchell, who served as a Chowan trustee and played a leading role in the founding of Chowan College. ROBERT C. WHITE Mr. Robert C. White is serving his third term on the Board of Trustees. He is a native and resident of Windsor. Mr. White studied business and science at North Carolina State University. He is ac tive in community affairs. He has served for 20 years as a member of the Windsor Town Council, and is also a member of the Development Board. Mr. White is a charter member of the fire department and served that department for 18 years. He is a member of the Board of Health and director of the Hope Foundation in Bertie County. Mr. White is also a director of the Martin County Savings and Loan. Mr. White is a deacon at Cashie Baptist Church and sings in the Mens Choir. He is married to the former Violet Lassiter of Winton. His hobbies are fishing and bird hunting. He is a farm owner. EDWIN L. WILLIAMS Edwin L. Williams of Kinston is returning for his fifth term on the Board of Trustees. He is a member of the First Baptist Church where he is chairman of the Church Building Committee. He has served as chairman of the Board of Deacons and several church committees. Mr. Williams is active in the community in the Chamber of Commerce, Industrial Commission and the United Way. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Kiwanis Club. A roofing contractor, he is president of the E. L. Scott Roofing Company. He is married to the former Grace Gunter of Sanford and they have two sons and one daughter. A native of Sanford, Mr. Williams lists his hob bies as hunting, fishing, woodwork and hor ticulture. H. DOUGLAS WHITE Mr. H. Douglas White has served over 20 years on the Board of Trustees including a number of times as chairman. He also has served as chairman of the Executive Com mittee of the Board of Trustees. A native of Colerain, Mr. White received the bachelor of science degree from Wake Forest College. He retired as manager of the Belk Tyler store in Rocky Mount after 32 years service with the store. Mr. White is active in the First Baptist Church of Rocky Mount where he has served as chairman of the Board of Deacons, Sun day school teacher and adult department superintendent, and in many other capacities. His community service includes president of the Old Community Chest, Rocky Mount United Fund, Lions Club, Chamber of Com merce, and Rocky Mount Merchants Association; chairman of the Salvation Ar my Board; and member of the Advisory Board of the Planters National Bank and Trust Co. in Rocky Mount and Board of Directors of the YMCA. Mr. White is married to the former Janet Cartwright rf Elizabeth City. They have one daughter REV. JOE McLEAN The Rev. Joe David McLean has been pastor of the Jackson Baptist Church since 1967. He also is a part-time area developer for Yokefellow Prison Ministry of North Carolina. A Dadeville, Alabama native, Mr. McLean served as instructor in pre- engineering at Wingate College and assis tant minister of Calvery Bapist Church in Roanoke, Virginia. He is a graduate of Clemson University with the bachelor of science and master of education degrees and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary with the bachelor of divinity. He also studied engineering on the graduate level at Bucknell University. Mr. McLean is active in community ser vice. he is a volunteer for the Northampton County Red Cross Service to Military Families. He also has served as chairman of the Northampton County Human Relations Commission; vice president of the Jackson Lions Club; and member of the Board of Directors of CADA. Mr. McLean served as president of the Roanoke-Chowan Baptist Ministers Con ference. He was nam^ Jackson Lion of the Year in 1974. He is married to the former Betsy Brooks McGee of Guilford County.
