Harris Named Week's Citizen Chowan College graduate, Ed Harris, Class of 1964, has been named Citizen of The Week in the Ahoskie NEWS-HERALD. The article was written by Jennifer Moore, staff writer. Harris was named chief of the Mur freesboro Police Department in 1979, after working his way up through the ranks. In late 1978, he attended the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va. where he had intensive train ing in various areas of law enforcement. Recently, he and five other officers in the county received instruction in JacksonviUe to form an emergency REACT team for handling different kinds of emergencies. He is the assistant leader of the REACT team. Harris is president of the North Carollna- Virginia Law Enforcement Association. The organization is made up of law officers from Richmond to Norfolk, down to Greenville and over to Rocky Mount. “We meet and ex change information on crimes in each other’s area,” he noted. The Murfreesboro chief is active in the Roanoke- Chowan Shrine Club and is a member of Meherrin Baptist Church. Wrote Jennifer Moore, “Ed is a man who loves what he does for a living and enjoys helping other people when he sees a need.” He is married to the former Trudy Britt and they have two sons, Greg and Jeff. Harris fondly remembers his days at Chowan and recalls that he was a member of the College choir. He retains his interest in music. He graduated from Chowan with an associate degree in liberal arts. His goal is to receive his political science degree by completing requirements at a college in the vicinity. '73 Graduate Named Unit Administrator The new administrator of the Bayside Unit of the Eastern State Hospital, Williamsburg, Va., is a Chowan graduate, Chris L. Bowman, Class of 1973. He comes to this job from the position of operations supervisor in the York County public works division. A native of Hampton, Va., Bowman received an associate degree in education from Chowan College and went on to earn a BA in political science from Old Dominion University. He completed requirements in 1977 for a Master’s in Public Administration from the Golden Gate University program at Langley Air Force Base. Bowman’s credentials also include teaching public administration classes at Thomas Nelson Community College.
