Outstanding Volleyball Players To Join '81 -82 Volleyball Team \ Volleyball action in the new Jesse Helms Center. Lady Braves Cage Squad Adds Six Top Players Veteran women’s volleyball coach, Janet Collins, has announced the signing to grant- in-aids of five outstanding high school volleyball players. Coach Collins expects these players to blend in with a nucleus of seven returning sophomores to make Chowan contenders for the NJCAA Region X title again this year. This past season, the Lady Braves posted a record of 22 wins and 8 losses against 2-year and 4-year colleges and universities. New signeesare; Terry Bricker - Setter/Hitter - 5’6” - Shenandoah, Virginia; Page County High School, Coach - Chris Carmen; Honors - All- District Team; Captain Senior year; starter 4 years in volleyball. Judy Lingard - Hitter - 5’9” - Oviedo, Florida; Oviedo High School, Coach - Anita Spring Volleyball In Building Team, After completing a very successful fall volleyball season with a 22-8 record, the Lady Braves continued working toward in- provement with a strong schedule of par ticipation during the Spring semester. “There were three aspects in our spring volleyball”, stated Coach Janet Collins, “namely, a weight training program, a regular volleyball class, and participation in the Tidewater Women’s Volleyball Association League.” The weight training program was under the supervision of Football Coach Dan Sur face and was conducted in the well-equipped weight room in the Helms Physical Educa tion Center. “Our purpose in this aspect of our program was to improve stren^h and jumping ability”, continued Collins. The volleyball class was under the direction of Coach Collins and the players worked on skills, team offenses and defenses, and on conditioning. “A valuable part of our spring volleyball was participation in the TWVA league, which ran from January thru April,” com- Carlson; Honors - Only one year of varsity volleyball experience. Pura Puertas - Setter/Hitter - 5’7” - Miami, Florida; South Miami Senior High School, Coach - Marilyn McClain; Hor«ors - Captain Senior Year; Miami Herald All-City Honorable Mention; Starter - Volleyball - 3 years. Robin Riddle - Hitter - 5’10’ - Oviedo, Florida, Oviedo High School; Coach - Anita Carlson; Honors - Most Valuable Player - 1980; 3 years starter on Volleyball. Kynette Willliams - Hitter - 5’9” - Philadelphia, PA; Martin Luther King High School, Coach - Mr. Robert Michaels; Honors - Captain Senior Year; All-Public Volleyball 1st Team -1980,4 years starter in Volleyball. Work Valuable Coach Says mented Coach Collins. “This was good com petition and provided a chance for all our beshmen to gain playing experience.” The TWVA league was composed of teams from the Navy, four Virginia Beach “A” Teams (USBVA First Division Teams), Old Dominion University, Suffolk, and teams from Tidewater Virginia and North Carolina - Chowan finished second in the league, behind Virginia Beach A and ahead of Old Dominion University. Against Virginia Beach A, Chowan posted a 2-4 record and the Lady Braves were 6-3 in nine outings against ODU. “Spring volleyball at Chowan”, continued Coach Collins, “provides an excellent op portunity to develop skills, strength, and ex perience. All of this will mean a great deal to the caliber of our volleyball program, and we expect 1981-82 to be an exciting com petitive winning season.” The Lady Braves hope to improve on last year’s 22-8 record as they get prepared for a stronger 1981-82 schedule. Chowan has announced the signing of six outstanding baskteball players for the 1981-82 season. The new signees are; Anita Anderson - a 6 ft. Center from Raleigh, N.C. She comes from W.G. Enloe High School where she averaged 15 points per game and pulled down 9 rebounds a game. Her individual honors include All Conference and All Metro. She was voted Most Outstanding Player by her teammates in her senior year. Her Coach is Calvin J. Dobbings. Erma Holley - a 5’H” Center from Merry Tyler To Play UNC-C Squad Chowan’s two-year volleyball standout and recent graduate, Terri Tyler, has sign ed an athletic grant-in-aid to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She will be a junior at UNC-C. Terri, a graduate of Hoke County High School in Raeford, had an outstanding career at Chowan, where she lettered in three varsity sports. In her freshman volleyball year, Terri was selected to the All-Region X team, the Region X All- Toumament team, and was the team’s best defensive player. In her sophomore year, she was a repeater on the All-Region and Tournament teams and selected as the team’s Most Valuable Player in leading Chowan to a ban ner year with a 22-8 record. In addition to her volleyball plaudits, Terri played an im portant reserve role on the women’s basket ball team and was a starter on the softball team, where she was the lead hitter for two years. Terri was selected as the Most Outstanding Female athlete for 1980-81. Terri is the daughter of Mrs. Annie R. Tyler of Route 3, Raeford. She was a business education major at Chowan. Hill, N.C. She played high school ball at Ber tie High School where she averaged 17 points per game and 15 rebounds per game. Erma’s Coach is Johnny Simpson. Vivian Myers - a 5’8” Forward from Chocowinity, N.C. She played high school basketball at Chocowinity High School where she average 17.8 points per game and had a rebound average of 13.3 Vivian’s in dividual honors include Washington Daily News Player of the Year, 1st Team All- Area, Tobacco Belt All Conference, First Team All-East. Vivian was instrumental in leading her team to the “A” State Cham pionship this year as her team finished 29-0. Vivian’s Coach is Larry Knox. Mary Weiss - a 5’6” Guard from Hampton, VA. She comes to Chowan from Kecoughtan High School where she averaged 10.3 points per game and maintained a 3.2 grade point average. Her individual honors include se cond team All-Peninsula District and selected as best defensive and co-most valuable player by her teammates. She helped lead her team to the Peninsula District Co-Championship and the Penin sula District Tournament Championship. Her team’s record was 18-4. Her Coach is Gordon White. Annette Huntley - a 5’6” Forward from Davidson, N.C. She played high school basketball at North Mecklenburg where she averaged 11 points per game and 5 rebounds per game. She was her team’s second leading scorer. She was instrumental in leading her team to the Southwestern 4A Conference Championship finishing with a state ranking of 7th in the final A.P. poll. Her team’s record was 18-4. She is coached by Carroll Mizelle. Gina Barron - a 5'4” Guard from Huntersville, N.C. She played high school basketball at North Mecklenburg where she averaged 9 points per game. Her team finished 15-3 in the conference, winning the Southwestern 4A Championship. Her team's overall record was 18-4. She is coached by Carroll Mizelle.
