Chowan College has lost a good friend with the death of former
Virginia Governor Colgate Darden, on June 9, 1981.
The week before his death, Dr. Darden visited Chowan College
with hiĀ£ wife, Constance. He came to Chowan to consult wi th and
offer his advise on the campus master landscape plan to President
Bruce E. Whitaker and other college officials, and Pat Crissman,
planning consultant. Darden had taken a personal interest in help
ing Chowan improve its campus.
The retired University of Virginia president ascended from the
Virginia House of Delegates to the U.S. House of Representatives,
and finally to governor in 1942. In the 1960's Gov. Mills Godwin call
ed on Darden to update the Virginia Constitution. He was once a
delegate to the United Nations General Assembly.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Colgate Darden, III, who
teaches physics at the University of South Carolina; and a daughter,
Irene Greenfield, wife of a diplomat stationed in Korea.
