In Eric Hoffer’s book, The True Believer, there are these suggestive words; “Dreams ... are mighty weapons. . . in all ages men have fought most desperately for beautiful cities yet to be built and gardens yet to be planted.” Lewis Mumford, in a similar vein, reminds us that “The cities and the mansions that people dream of are those in which they finally live.” Dr. and Mrs. Whitaker, these assembled friends have gathered here to thank you for your dreams and your toil during the past quarter of a century. For Chowan College, for sister in stitutions, for the cause of Christian higher education and for the Baptists of North Carolina, you have dreamed worthy dreams and labored to make them come true. Your actions have made a difference for every one of us in this place. For your lengthened shadow, we pause today in friendship and in gratitude. Herman W. Gatewood, left, Director of the School of Graphic Communications, assists Professor Patsy Edwards in unwrapping a high -speed, computerized typesetting machine, donated to the school by Mergenthaler Linotype Company of Melville, New York. The typesetting computer will be used for research by faculty members as well as student training within the educa tional programs offered. The value of the machine contribution, with its related equipment and accesories, is $153,000, and is one of the largest single equipment donations received by the deportment during the past decode.
