46 years of service Wiggins, Whitaker among Baptist leaders When Norman Wiggins visited Chowan College recently over 46 years of North Carolina Baptist college leadership and broad ser vice to the Southern Baptist Con vention were represented on Chowan’s campus. The combination of Wiggins’ 18 years as Campbell University president and Bruce Whitaker’s 28 years as Chowan president produc ed the 46-year total. Each has provided additional leadership for North Carolina and Southern Baptists beyond his ser vice as a college president. Both are products of North Carolina Baptist colleges. Wiggins is a graduate of Campbell College and Wake Forest University with bachelor and law degrees. Whitaker is a Wake Forest Univer sity and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary graduate. Campbell’s president has served as a member and chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Sunday School Board. He is currently serv ing his second term as president of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. He is a former deacon at both Wake Forest church, Winston-Salem, and First church, Buies Creek. Wiggins is a member of the Evangelism and Education Committee of the Bap tist World Alliance and was chair man, Tellers Committee, 1984 Southern Baptist Convention. *!*«■ sr Recognized for service Sydney Lewis of Hampton, Vo., receives a certificate of apprecia tion for her service as President of the Chowan Alumni Associa tion during 1984-85. The certificate was presented by the new president. Welter Gardner, Jr., of Worrenton. The presentation was made during Spring Festival weekend. Whitaker served as state secretary, Student Department of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina before coming to. Chowan in 1957. He also served as associate pastor and minister of education of an Atlanta Baptist church. He is a former president of the Association of Southern Baptist Colleges and Schools. Each has provided leadership and service in community affairs, with Whitaker serving as a former chairman and current member of the North Carolina Commission for Mental Health, Mental Retarda tion and Substance Abuse Ser vices. He is presently chairman of the Commission’s Mental Health Committee. The Whitaker School at Butner for emotionally disturb ed youth was named in Whitaker’s honor on June 30,1982, In yejirs of service, Whitaker is the dean of presidents of colleges sponsored by the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. Annual football camp conducted Chowan has completed its fifth annual football camp, with a record number of players atten ding. Guest instructors included Jerry Holmes of the New Jersey Generals, Jody Schulz of the Philadelphia Eagles, Mackie Carden of Elon College, Don Murry of East Carolina University, Jim Bollman of N. C. State University and Linwood Ferguson, a former Chowan player and coach. The camp staff included Herman Henderson and Larry Hollman of Murfreesboro High School, Donnie Simpson and Bob Williams of Cur rituck High School, Gene Brewer of Southview High School, Rhett Raynor of Triton High School, and Dave Anthony of Matthews High School.
