Two members of Chowan Col
lege’s basketball team have signed
scholarships with out-of-state
schools, with guard Greg Holl
ingsworth going to the University
of South Florida in Tampa and Jim
Dillard inking with Middle Ten
nessee State University in Mur
freesboro, Tenn.
Both were members of the
1983-84 team which advanced to the
Final Four of the National Junior
College Athletic Association’s
Basketball Tournament and are
two of the sophomores who posted
a 57-13 record, including only one
loss at home during their two years
on the squad. The pair also led the
Braves to a new record this season,
: winning 25 games during the
regular season.
Both picked up several honors
during their careers at Chowan,
with Hollingsworth earning the
Hardee’s Classic MVP award and
named to the Eastern Tarheel All-.
Conference Team and the NJCAA
Region X All-Conference Team.
Dillard, a former high school
teammate of N.C. State’s Nate
McMillan, caught the attention of
scouts in high school and continued
to do so this season, despite sitting
out 10 games with injuries.
South Florida’s assistant coach
Everett Bass was at Chowan for
Hollingsworth’s signing and Mid
dle Tennessee coach Bruce
Stewart was on hand for Dillard’s
inking.
Hollingsworth will be joining a
South Florida teeim which earned a
NIT bid this season in which the
Bulls defeated Wake Forest in a
first round game and lost to
Louisville in the Bulls’ second
game of the tournament. South
Florida is a member of the Sunbelt
Conference and [wsted an 18-12
record this year.
Dillard will be joining a Middle
Tennessee State team which
posted a 17-14 record and a 7-7
record in the Ohio Valley Con
ference. The Tennessee team earn
ed a NCAA tournament bid after
winning the OVC tournament and
was defeated by North Carolina in
the NCAA opening round.
Hollingsworth will be coached by
Lee Rose, who led UNC-Charlotte
and Purdue University to Final
Four appearances as their head
coach. Dillard will be coached by
Bruce Stewart, the youngest coach
in the NCAA tournament this year.
This past season was Stewart’s
first year with MTSU.
Bass says USF “needed a
shooting guard, an offensive
guard” because the Bulls were los
ing 45 percent of their offense with
the graduation of seniors Darrell
Patterson and Charlie Bradley.
South Florida learned of Holl
ingsworth when the Chowan
player’s former high school coach
told USF about his former player.
USF was recruiting a high school
player of Hollingsworth’s former
coach.
Bass says USF feels they are get
ting a good player and says Holl
ingsworth will be used as a utility
guard to perform all duties of a
guard — shooting, running the of
fense and playing defense.
Bass praised the Chowan pro
gram, calling the facilities one of
the finest junior college facilities
he has seen and noting the Chowan
coaches had been “honest and up
front” with USF during the
recruiting efforts. Bass said with
Hollingsworth coming from
Chowan, “He knows how to win.”
Chowan’s assistant coach Kenny
Bunker, filling in for hospitalized
head coach Bob Burke, says, “Our
loss is definitely South Florida’s
gain.” Bunker said the offensive
power of Hollingsworth will be
missed, but noted there were so
many intangibles the guard added
to the game which will be hard to
replace.
Hollingsworth said he chose USF
because of their winning tradition,
coach Rose, and because he
wanted to go somewhere where he
could start. According to the
sophomore, he will be given that
opportunity at South Florida.
The Raeford native says he
thinks he can help the USF pro
gram and says, “I’m going to work
harder than ever when I get down
there.” The Braves’ guard says he
has admired Rose’s coaching style
and predicts, “I’m going to give
him alll’ve got.”
With the departure of their two
seniors, USF is looking for Holl
ingsworth to meet or exceed his
17.2 points per game average this
past season at Chowan. The guard
also handed out four assists per
game and shot 57.2 percent from
the floor as the Braves posted a
27-4 season.
Hollingsworth- says Burke told
him he could make a NCAA Divi
sion I team and pushed him in
practice to reach the level of play
needed for Division I. The Braves’
trip to Kansas and their Final Four
finish was the greatest sports thrill
of his life, noted the guard.
The MTSU coach characterized
Dillard as “game tested” and was
“just what we were looking for,”
Stewart said Dillard had been
taught to play defense and his total
game will fit in with the style of
play used by MTSU.
