Mrs. Dorothy Wallace, chair
man, said Dr. J. Howard Jackson,
chairman of the Department of
Business Education and Office Ad
ministration, Virginia Com
monwealth University, opened the
program in Turner Auditorium of
McDowell Columns. His topic was
“Choosing a Business Career in the
Information Age.”

Rudi Schatz, IVM systems engin-
neer, spoke on “Computer Careers
and Opportunities” in Tyler
Auditorium of Camp HaU. Ms.
Claudia Adams, assistant general
manager of The Galleon
Esolanade, Nags Head, spoke on
“Careers and Opportunities in
Merchandise Management” in
Turner Auditorium. Dr. Jackson
presented “Secretarial Occupa
tions and Office Management” in
Marks Hall Auditorium.
Howard Jackson eanjed his
Ph.D. from Ohio State University
and M.S. and B.S. degrees from the
University of Tennessee. He is a
Certified Professional Secretary.
He has served as manager and
buyer for the Furniture Division of
the W. M. Vasey Corp. in Knox
ville, Tenn. and consultant in com
merce to the Government of India
under the auspices of the U. S.
Department of State. Prior to com
ing to VCU in 1971, he was chair
man of the Department of Business
Education at Georgia Southern
College.
Books Published
Co-author of four textbooks,
Jackson has served as a consultant
to a wide variety of state and
federal agencies as well as other
private and public institutions.
Rudi Schatz received the A.A.S.
in electronic data processing from
Pitt Community College and B.A.
in psychology from East Carolina
University. He has worked as an
accounting tutor and for Radio
Shack and McDonald’s.
He said he discussed “selected
jobs, trends, education necessary
and the ‘computer personality.’
The latter, I feel, is a computer
literate person with extensive com
munication skills.”
Manager and Buyer
Claudia Adams serves as depart
ment merchandise manager,
department manager, and buyer
for Galleon Esplanade. She is also
assistant corporate controller for
Cabana East, Inc., and The
Galleon Esplanade. Her respon
sibilities include all aspects of ac
counting and finance, overseeing
all office functions and computer
operations, and development of ex
tensive research study.
As a member of the senior
management team, she is involved
with customer relations and has
previous experience in the R. H.
Macy Co. complaint department.
As department manager she has
presented from 12-15 fashion shows
a year. She annually represents
the retailing field at a Job Fair for
the Dare County high school
students.
A pair of attractions — the Fall
Festival of Marching Bands and
football games featuring the
halftime crowning of the queen —
highlighted Homecoming Satur
day, Oct. 19
The Chowan Braves scored a big
victory against the Wesley College
Wolverines, of Dover, Del., before
a packed stadium. After having the
first touchdown called back
because of a penalty, the Braves
went on to post a 34-11 win.
Miss Lane Windham, a
sophomore from Lexington, was
crowned as the 1985 Homecoming
Queen. Miss Bernadette Ashe of
Ahoskie was selected as Freshman
Princess.
The queen and princess received
their crowns and bouquet of
flowers from President Bruce E.
Whitaker during the halftime
ceremonies in beautiful fall
weather.
Other Homecoming court
members included freshmen
Christine Cello of Boca Raton,
Fla.; Dee Ann Feuerstein of Apex;
and Debra Fazio of Okinawa,
Japan. Sophomore members are
Valerie Boyd of Elgin, S. C.; Deb
bie Overton of Ahoskie; and Deb
bie Whipp, of Chester, Va.
Halftime Show
The halftime show was
presented by North Stafford High
School, replacing Deep Creek of
Chesapeake, Va. The group was
selected as Band of the Day from a
field of 12 bands and winner of $500
donated by Belk-Tylers of Ahoskie
in the Festival of Marching Bands
held that morning in the stadium.
The pre-game show was given by
Oscar Smith High School of
Chesapeake, winner of its division
for bands with 60 membes of less.
Alumni Activities
The alunmi gathered on the
brick plaza by McDowell Columns
and in the Columns lounge after
the game. The luncheon was held f.
in the President’s Dining Room of
Thomas Cafeteria, with the classes
of 1957,1958,1959, and 1960 holding
joint reunions. The approximately
100 graduates and professors of the
former nursing school also par
ticipated in a reunion.
First prize in the Residence Hall
Decorations Contest was captured
by Jenkins Hall, with Parker Hall
second. Parker won parade firsts
in originality and theme, with
Jenkins'second in the theme cate
gory. The parade was formed on
campus and followed a route
through downtown Murfreesboro,
and ending at a site where the
traditional bonfire and pep rally
were held.
The Student Government
Association, with Miss Betty Ann
Drake of Franklin, Va., president,
and Miss Pam Riddle, adviser,
sponsored Homecoming activities.
Spirit Day was celebrated earlier
in the week, along with several
other Homecoming Week ac
tivities.
