Five slated tor Sports Hall of Fame I I Inaugural induction includes former Chowan athletes, supporter Four former Chowan College athletes and a former strong supporter of the college’s athletic teams will be the first inductees into the Sports Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place on November 2, following the Chowan-Nassau football game, in the President’s Din ing Room of Thomas Cafeteria. Selected for the inaugural induction are Donald G. Mat thews, League City, Texas; W. Hilliard Greene, Jr., Raleigh; Thomas T. Grayson, Burlington; Albert L. Vaughan, Ahoskie; and the late E. Patterson Banks of Murfreesboro. The Hall of Fame award is presented to the inductees who have had athletic achievement as a student at Chowan, as an alumunus who has brought considerable fame to the college as well as himself, or as a supporter who rendered invaluable assistance to the Braves’ Club and its athletic department. Tommy Grayson named 1964 All-Region X A Nashville native, Tommy Grayson entered Chowan College in the fall of 1963 and graduated in the spring of 1966. As a Chowan athlete, Grayson played basketball and baseball for one year and foot ball two years, being named All- Region X in football in 1964. He was co-captain of the 1964 football team. Grayson accepted a football scholarship to Guilford College. He played football, basketball, and baseball at Guilford College and made All Carolinas Conference and All District 26 in football in 1965. Grayson led the Carolinas Conference in scoring and rushing in 1965 and was captain of the 1966 football team. ’ In 1967, Grayson played on the Guilford College basketball team that won the Carolinas Conference and District 26 Championship and qualified for the NAIA National Basketball Championship. But baseball was Grayson’s first love and while at Guilford College he was All Carolinas Conference and All District 26 for three years. He highlighted his college baseball career by being named first team All-American in 1967 and 1968. Grayson was drafted in 1968 by the Detroit Tigers or^nization and played five years of Triple-A baseball for the Tigers. In 1972, he left the Detroit Tigers TOMMY GRAYSON PAGE SIX—The Chowanian, October, 1985 PAT BANKS, SR. and entered the coaching profes sion, serving brief tenures at Benvenue School, Rocky Mount; Northwest Junior High, Oak Ridge; Asheboro Junior High, Asheboro. Currently, Grayson is coaching football at Eastern Guilford, a position he has held for the past eleven years. His 1981 team was Division II East Cham pions with a 12-1 record. Grayson has been married 16 years to Pam Distasio of Glenn Ridge, N.J. They and their daughters, Miffy, Molly, and Meghan, reside in Burlington. Jim Garrison, athletic director and football coach, will induct Grayson into the Sports Hall of Fame. Banks served Chowan teams in many ways Murfreesboro native, E. Patter son Banks, Sr., assumed a number of business positions in Hertford County. He was the manager of the Red Apple service station for 25 years and the owner and operator of Murfressboro Sunoco for 17 years. He was a member of the Mur freesboro Baptist Church, charter member of the Murfreesboro Ex change Club, and member of Sudan Temple of New Bern. Banks was a member of the Murfreesboro Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years and fire chief for 12 years.
