Braves named All-Coastal Conference Four Chowan football players were named to the Ail-Coastal Con ference team with one other player making the second team and another making honorable men tion. Henry Kennedy and Terry In gram were named to the first team offense. Kennedy was named as the first team center and Ingram was selected as first team flanker. Jimmy Burnette and Kevin Cox made the first team defensive unit. Burnette was selected as the unit’s defensive end and Cox was one of the defensive backs selected. Raymond Hunter was named to the second team defense as a linebacker, while Danny Givens was named to the honorable men tion offensive unit as tackle. Ingram led the Braves in pass receptions and reception yardage this season. Kennedy anchored the Braves’ defensive line. Burnette was one of the Braves’ leading tacklers and Cox was also a leading tackier for the Braves. Cox also punted for Chowan in 1985. Long Term of Service Branch served for 17 years on the Board of Trustees, 20 years on the Endowment Committee, and one year on the Board of Advisors. He died on Feb. 5,1986. The resolutions commended “the example of his record of devo tion to the interests of Christian higher education, and to other benevolent causes which he engag ed throughout the course of a long and prosperous life.” Trustees who have completed their four-year terms of service received certificates of apprecia tion. Harrington, Lewiston/Woodville; Mike Johnson, Hamilton; Thomas McCrary, Raleigh; the Rev. Ben nie Pledger, New Bern; Charles L. Revelle, Sr., Murfreesboro; and Mrs. Etta Stokes, Winston-Salem, New Members Welcomed New members welcomed to the Board of Trustees were: the Rev. Dennis Bazemore, Chadboum; Miss Jessie Helen Belch, Rich Square; Sam Ewell, Enfield; Felix McDaniel, Henderson; James Sherrer, Raleigh; H. Douglas White, Rocky Mount; Robert C. White, Windsor; Edwin Williams, Kinston; and L. Clement Yancey, Oxford. In South Carolina Pridgen speaks at Conference Dr. Allen Pridgen, professor of English, has been invited to deliver a paper entitled “The Language of Concern: Flannery O’Conner and Northrop Frye” at the tenth an nual conference of the Philological Association of the Carolinas at Charleston, S.C. March 13-15. The paper explores parallels bet ween O’Connor’s understanding of the purpose of Uterature and Frye’s hterary theory. Commented Dr. Pridgen, “1 have delivered several papers on O’Connor’s fiction, and Frye’s literary theory was the basis for my doctoral dissertation on Darte Gabriel Rossetti’s poetry. Frye is considered by many the most important literary theorist of this century and O’Connor’s fiction (most published in the 1950’s) is usually seen as among the best 20th Century American fiction, Pridgen noted. He added, “My specialty in my doctoral program was 19th century British literature, but since com pleting the Ph.D. in 1975 I have pursued my scholarly interests in contemporary (post World War II) American poetry, fiction, literary theory, and popular culture. Pridgen is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (B.A.), East Carolina University (M.A.), and Florida State University (Ph.D.). He came to Chowan in 1979. DR. ALLEN PRIDGEN Chowan College Scholarshare Sidney Ruff is a Chowan College student from Florence, S.C. In addition to his studies and campus activities, Sidney also worlcs parttime in the cafeteria on campus. Sidney is one of the 360 Chowan students who work up to 20 hours a week to help pay for their college education. Without this financial aid, many of these students would not be able to remain in college. Chowan is pleased to provide and help pay for the work of students who take this kind of initiative.
