Chairman, Board of Advisors Kunkle retires from medical practice Dr. Herman Melvin Kunkle, chairman of Chowan’s Board of Advisors, was honored for “his 34 years of unselfish service to his patients” at a recent retirement dinner at the Portsmouth, Va., Holiday Inn. The retirement dinner was given by Orthopaedic Surgery, Ltd., where Dr. Kunkle began his service in May, 1952 as the second orthopaedic surgeon to practice in Portmouth, his native city. Dr Ar thur A. Kirk, who opened his of fice in 1951, presided at the din ner. Receives Plaque Dr. Kunkle received a plaque and gift from his associates at Or- thpaedic Surgery, Ltd. The plaque reads, “In great appreciation to Herman Melvin Kunkle who represents the highest ideals of a dedicated and humane physician and orthopaedic surgeon from his colleagues for his 34 years of unselfish service to his patients. May 1952 to December 1986.” He also received a quilt made by the members of the clerical staff. The dinner was attended by members and former members of the firm and his family, to include Private college Deans hosted at meeting Twenty-two student develop ment deans and their associates from six North Carolina private colleges visted Chowan recently. Stu dent Development staff hosted the meeting and presented morning and afternoon ses sions on such subjects as discipline, student problems, medical topics, dealing with parents, campus legal issues, emergency loan fund, and new student orientation. Clayton Lewis, Dean of Students, above, led in the planning of the program and served as the campus coordinator. Dr. Herman Kunkle, Jr., of Fort Worth, Tex., James Arthur, Surry, Va., Timothy Lawrence, Suffolk, Va., and daughter, Mary Louis Goodenow, Miami Shores, Fla. His son. Dr. Herman Melvin Kunkle, Jr., is a candidate for graduation in the spring of 1987 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has taught anatomy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical School and has been in volved in research at that institu tion and Houston and Baylor Universities. Chowan Represented President and Mrs. Bruce E. Whitaker and Director of Development Bobby Cross represented Chowan College. Dr. Kunkle is a graduate of Carson-Newman College and Medical College of Virginia. He served two tours as a doctor in the U.S. Navy. During World War II, he served in the pacific on the hospital ship, USS Constellation. This ship later was purchased by a private humanitarian group and converted to USS Hope that visits foreign stations. He also served during the Korean War. Active in Community Kunkle is active in the com munity. He is a deacon at Western Branch Baptist Church, Portsmouth, and a member of the Rotary Club. He is a member of the staffs at Maryville and Port mouth General Hospitals. Dr. Kunkle is a member of a number of local, state and na tional medical societies, including the Portsmouth Academy of Medicine, Medical Society of Virginia, Southern Medical Association, American College of Surgeons, Virginia State Or thopaedic Association, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Portsmouth Academy of Medicine, and American Medical Association. Chowan’s president said that Dr. Kunkle had not only been “an ideal physician, but parent, chur chman and citizen. He has follow ed and supported many good causes like Chowan College, which need people like him. All of this, in one way or another, came through at the retirement din ner.” Dr. Whitaker brought greetings to Kunkle “in behalf of all of us who live and work at Chowan, as well as your peers on the Board of Advisors and Board of Trustees.” Kunkle began his service on the Board of Advisors in Feb. 1968 and became chairman in Sept. 1973. Mrs. Kunkle said the three most important things to her husband of 41 years are “his church, fami ly and medical practice.” r The chairman of the Board of Advisors since 1973, Dr. Herman Melvin Kunkle of Portsmouth, Va., is shown presiding ot a meeting of the group in one of the semi-annual sessions.
