Awarded at Graduation Myers, Vest Distinguished Alumni Mrs. Elaine Early Myers of Ahoskie and Captain William Thomas Vest Jr., of Washington, D.C., received the Chowan Distinguished Alumni Award dur ing Graduation exercises, May 17 in the Helms Center. The award, presented by Presi dent Bruce E. Whitaker, is made to alumni for their contribution to Chowan and religious, educational and civic causes. Class of 1960 An Ahoskie native, Mrs. Myers DR. R. HARGUS TAYLOR DR. M. DWAINE GREENE Bible Dictionari; to include articles by two Chowanians Mercer Dictionary of the Bible—projected for release by Mercer University Press in May, 1987—will include articles by M. Dwaine Greene, Chairman, Department of Religion and Philosophy, and by Dr. R. Hargus Taylor, Chaplain to the College and part-time instructor in New Testament studies. Both men have signed contractual agreements which commit them to the research, writing, and submis sion of articles ranging in length from 125-150 words, each. Dr. Greene, who joined the Chowan faculty in 1986, will contribute articles dealing with biblical places, persons, and concepts, as follows; “Accho,” “Bar tholomew,” “Great Tribulation,” “Kidron,” “New Birth,” “Reconciliation,” and “Sergius Paulus.” Dr. Taylor, whose primary duties as college chaplain are supplemented with the teaching of one course each semester in New Testament studies, will prepare and contribute articles on “Via Dolorosa” and “Virgin.” A one-volumne dictionary of the Bible whose ar ticles will all be contributed by members of the Na tional Association of Baptist Professors of Religion, the Mercer Dictionary of the Bible will contain 1,000-1,200 pages, including maps, charts, diagrams, and numerous photographs. The dictionary is designed primarily for use by col lege students who are being introduced to courses in biblical literature. Its editorial staff includes Dr. Wat son E. Mills, General Editor, Mercer Univerity; Dr. Joel Drinkard, Associate Editor, The Southern Bap tist Theological Seminary; Dr. Walter Harrellson, Associate Editor, Vanderbilt Divinity School; Dr. Edgar V. McKnight, Associate Editor, Furman University; and Dr. David Scholer, Associate Editor, Northern Baptist Seminary. graduated from Chowan College in 1960. She receive the B.A. from Carson-Newman College and has taken Masters Training at the School of Social Work, Virginia Commonwealth University. From 1963 to 1970, she was a child welfare worker in Gates County. From 1970 to 1987, Mrs. Myers served as founder and owner, as well as the ad ministrator and social worker at Pinewood Manor Rest Home, in Ahoskie. During this time, the home increased from 24 to 100 beds with 40 employed. She has been ac tive in leadership roles in the North Carolina Association, Long Term Care Facilities, serving as a State Director since 1976 and as its first chairperson from 1978 to 1984. She also served as a district vice presi dent. Receives Other Awards Noted Dr. Whitaker, “During her service, she has lead in im proving the quaUty of care offered by the state’s long term care facilities. The Association award ed her the President’s Award in 1978 and Long Term Educator Award in 1986.” Whitaker continued, “Mrs. Myers has also been very active in her church, conununity, and alma mater. At Earlys Baptist Church, she is choir director, church pianist, Sunday School teacher, and vice president of Baptist women. Mrs. Myers is active in the Ahoskie Woman’s Club and is one of th Hertford County Heart Association’s most successful fund raisers.” Stated Whitaker, “Mrs. Myers has devoted considerable time and effort to Chowan College, seizing several terms on the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors and for many years as the 1960 class chairman. She is a charter member of the Hertford County Alumni Chapter and is a member of the college’s Endowment Com mittee.” Director at Ridgecroft At Ridgecroft School, she has served on the Board of Directors and assisted in the program to build a new library. She is married to Lawrence Wood Myers and they have only one child, Theresa Paige who has completed her freshman year at Chowan. Vest a Virginia Native Captain Vest is a native of Lyn chburg, Va., and a 1962 graduate of Chowan. He received his B.S. in General Science froni East CaroUna University. He attended Navy Officer Candidate School and was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy in 1965. Captain Vest initially served as a Weapons/Deck Officer.
