Baptist Student Union elects leadership for coming year The Baptist Student Union/Cam pus Christian Fellowship has elected six returning students to serve as an Officer’s Council—con sisting (rf a presidents and five vice-presidents—is charged with the responsibilities of leadership, programming, planning, and pro- maotion, in consultation with the chaplain to the college, who serves as advisor to the Baptist Student Union. Davis Elected President Cecil M. Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Manning Davis, 708 Brunswick Place, Cary, has been elected by his fellow students to serve as President of BSU/CCF during the coming school year. In this capacity, he will be expected to give general oversight and coor dination to the overall ministry of the organization, while working cooperatively with his corps of vice-presidents in projecting and maintaining a wholesome schedule of religious events/activities for the campus community. A member of First Baptist Church, Cary, he has been quite active in the church’s youth group. Royal Ambassadors, and choir. He- participated with missions teams to Costa Rica in 1984 and 1985, and served as a staff counselor at Camp Caraway during the sum mer of 1986. A Pre-Pharmacy ma jor and an honor student, Davis has been actively engaged in BSU ministries on both the State and local levels during his freshman year as a Chowanian. Five Vice-Presidents The five vice-presidents who. CECIL DAVIS DAVID BEAMON LAURA ANN RYALS SHARON DAVIS along with the President, comprise the BSU/CCF Officers’ Council in clude: David Beamon, Kinston, who will serve as Vice-President for programming and Enlistment; Martin A. Clemons, Raleigh,who will serve as Vice-President for Spiritual Growth and Nature; Sharon R. Davis, Newport News, Virginia, who wiD serve as Vice- President for Promotion and Publicity; Laura Ann Ryals, Siler TANYA M. SHEARIN City, with responsibilities as Vice- President for Special Programs and Emphases; and Tanya M. Shearin, Cary, Vice-President for Missions and Outreach. David Beamon, who is enrolled in the Business-Administation cur riculum, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Willie E. Beamon of Kinston. In ad dition to his interest in BSU and related activities, he is a member of the College Choir and has par ticipated in drama productions on campus during his freshman year. He is a member of New Christian Chapel Church, Kinston, where he has been active in the youth and music ministries. Printing Technology is the field of study chosen by Martin Clemons, son of the Reverend and Mrs. Clemons, 2100 Ramseur i Scholarship established President Bruce E. Whitaker receives a check for $10,000 from Mr. and Mrs. Oakel B. Bass of Durham to establish the William J. “Buck" and Fannie G. Jones Endowed Scholarship. Also present was Vint Tilaon, right, associate director of development. Stated Sr. Whitaker, “Preference will be given to students from Nor thampton Countj;. The catalog will cany the fact that this scholarship was funded by their daughter, Frances Jones Bass, and her hus band, Oakel B. Bass."Dr. Whitaker thanked the Basses for their gift and noted “students across the years to come will benefit from this scholar ship.” Mrs. Bass is an alumnus of the Class of 1938. Street, Raleigh. He is a member of Lincoln Memorial Baptist church, Durham, which his father serves as pastor. Church responsibilities have included the presidency of the Junior Usher Board and treasurer for the Sunday School. A member of the college choir at Chowan, Martin also serves as a residence halls on campus. He, too, is an honor student at Chowan. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Lloyd Davis, who serve as career misssionaries under ap pointment by the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, Sharon Davis grew up in Uruguay, South America. She is a major in the Commercial Art program at Chowan, and a recipient of academic honors. She enjoys playing the guitar for worship services and for other occasions involving group singing. Memorial Baptist Church, Newport News, Virginia, is “home” church during her ab sence from family and lifelong friends in Uruguay. Laura Ann Ryals, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Gilliland, 516 East Fourth Street, Siler City, North Carolina, is enrolled in the Accounting curriculum at Chowan. She is a member of Brush Creek Baptist Church, Chatham County, where she has been actively in volved in Sunday School, Church Training, and Acteens. In addition to her work with BSU/CCF during her initial year at Chowan, Laura has appeared in the Chowan Players’ productions of “To Kill A Mockingbird”and “South Pacific.” She is also a valued student assistant in the college library. Tanya Shearin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Louis Sherin, 105 Regency Place, Cary, North Carolina, is enrolled in the Photography curriculum. Department of Graphic Com munications. She is a member of First Baptist Church, Cary, where she has been acitve in Sunday School, Church Training, Choir, puppet ministry, and as a 12th Grade Representative to the Church Youth Council. “Each of these young persons has already demonstrated the kind of conmiitment to Christian missions and witness which makes him/her a valued member of any campus community,” noted Dr. R. Hargus Taylor, Chaplain to the College. “Their spirit, enthusiasm, Abilities, and dedication hold the promise of an eventful and rewarding year through the ministries of Baptist Student Union/Campus Christian Fellowship under their leader ship.” Social Science professors hosted at campus meeting Faculty members in the social sciences in Baptist colleges throughout North Carolina, were guests of the college on April 10-11 for the biennial Interdepartmental Meeting of Social Science Teachers of North Carolina Baptist Colleges. Sponsored jointly by a host col lege and the Council on Christian Higher Education, these biennial gatherings are designed to foster scholarship and to promote fellowship among the faculties of the colleges related to the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. Professors John W. Gosnell and Charles L. Paul, of the Department of Social Science, served as chair man and program chairman, respectively, for the two-day event. The program, which was arrang ed for these colleagues in the social sciences, included the presentation of the following papers and ad dresses: “Monnet and deGauUe, a Relectant Interface,” by Dr. Anne T. Moore, Campbell University; “Quo Vadis Southern Baptists?” Reflections on a Decade of Confu sion and Change,” by Dr. T. Robert Mullinax, Executive Secretary, Council on Christian Higher Education, Baptist State Convention of North Carolina; “The Ninety-First Through the Ninety-Ninth Congresses: Some Reflections,” by Dr. G. William Whitehurst, University Lecturer in Public Affairs, Old Dominion University, and retired Con gressman from Virginia’s Second Congressional District; and “Keystone Conquistadors: Mur freesboro’s Filibusters of the 1850s,” Dr. Thomas C.
