Becoming a tradition Living Christmas tree lighted in ceremony With the help of Santa and his elves, Chowan “set aglow” its living Christmas tree in front of Whitaker Library Dec. 1 to herald the beginn ing of the Christmas season on campus. This is the second year for the lighting of the Christmas tree, sponsored by the staffs of Whitaker Library and Student Development and the Stu dent Government Association. SGA Provides Assistance The 400 colored lights are provided by the library and SGA. This year, the tree is topped by a six-foot star bearing 56 white lights donated by the SGA. The tree was prepared for the lighting ceremony by the maintenance department. Before the late afternoon program, the Chowan Stage Band, directed by Professor Bob Brown, played holiday music. Santa, alias SGA presi dent Bill Garvey of Virginia Beach, presided. He introduced Dean of the College Frank Lowe to light the tree. Lowe “threw the switch” by plugging the cord into the base of the sidewalk lamp. Dr. James Chamblee, chairman of the Fine Arts Depart ment, led the crowd of students, faculty and staff and their families, in the singing of several carols. The Voices of Inspiration, sponsored by Dr. Carl Garrott, head of the language department, led the singing of “0 Come All Ye Faithful,” Sings Solo in Spanish Sharon Davis, sophomore who lived in Uruguay most of her life with her Southern Baptist missionary parents, sang and played on the guitar “Away in the Manger” in Spanish. The elves, Theresa Burdi, Claude Flynn, Angie Felton and Bill Noyes, distributed candy canes with SGA officers and Alpha Mu Gamma, honorary foreign language society, handed out cookies. Garvey thanked Jack Hassell, director of physical plant, and members of his staff, Mike Terry, Bernard Vaughan, and Rubin Bishop, for decorating the tree. He thanked the SGA, library and Student Development for providing the decorations. Sarah Davis of the library staff planned and coordinated the program. She said she was “very pleased” with the response of the students, who turned out in large numbers. She said the Christmas tree is a “beautiful sight” and helps to generate the Christmas spirit on campus. Mrs. Davis said she is looking forward to continuing the tradition next year. The tree will remain lit through December. Mrs. Davis invited the public to visit the campus and see the tree in front of the library. Following the program, the cafeteria, under Director of Food Services Ron Thompson, provided a roast beef and fried chicken buffet dinner in Thomas Cafeteria. r W Many students, faculty and staff members gathered in front of Whital^er Library for the lighting of the campus Christmas tree.
