Expresses appreciation for honor Ben Rich, of Newport News, Va., spoke of his appreciation for Chowan College in his acceptance address after being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Rich was the captain of the 1954football squad. Former quarterback inducted New Castle, Del., resident, Dave Whaley, outstanding quarterback of the 1963 Braves' football team and a new member of the Chowan Sports Hall of Fame, ad dresses the audience attending the banquet on November 14. Whaley played in the Delaware Blue-Gold All-Star Game and was captain of the victorious Gold Team. Enrolling at Chowan in 1962, Whaley was an All-Conference choice and Honorable Mention All- American in 1963 as a quarterback. Played Professionally Leaving Chowan, he attended the University of Connecticut where he started as the quarterback and place kicker for two years. As a senior, Whaley quarterbacked the first team in state history to defeat Yale University, passing for 228 yards, kicking two field goals and an extra point. Honorable Mention All-East Coast as a senior, Whaley went on to play professionally with the Wilmington Clippers of the Atlantic Coast League and was second in the league in passing in 1969. Whaley finished his career with the PAGE 4—TheChowanian, December, 1987 Harrisburg Capitals of the same league. Whaley is currently employed by General Chemical Company of New Castle where he lives wito his wife Kristine and their daughters. Dawn and Shannon, and son, Justin. Gary Maftison, fop cage player, signs with State Chowan sophomore basketball player Gary Maattison, of Raleigh, has signed a letter of intent to at tend North Carolina State Universi ty, according to Bob Biu-ke, head basketball coach. Mattison, the second Chowan player to sign with North Carolina State in three years, cited being close to his faniily and the educa tional support that North Carolina State could provide as the deciding factors in his signing.
