Amy Pierce is ’87 Homecoming Queen; Christi King Princess AMY PIERCE . . Homecoming Queen for 1987 A Physical Education Major from Gatesville CHRISTI KING . . 1987 Freshman Princess A graduate of Apex High School Chowan’s Homecoming Queen for 1987 is Amy Pierce, a physical education major from Gatesville. Amy is a graduate of Gates County High School and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Pierce. She plays small forward on the Lady Braves basketball team. Freshman Christi King of Cary was named Princess. She is a graduate of Apex High School where she was Homecoming Queen. Activities on Homecoming Day began with a parade sponsored by the Student Government Association, headed by Bill Garvey of Virginia Beach. The parade was one of the best in many years and showed both the creativity and spirit of the Chowan students. Alumni Activities Alumni activities included receptions before and after the football game and luncheon. The Braves made the day a per fect one for the returning alumni by coming from behind to defeat the 10th ranked junior coUege team, Montgomery, 27-24. Chowan trailed at the half, 21-7, but scored 20 points while holding the Knights to just a field goal in the second half. With the score 24-21 in favor of Montgomery, running back Ervin Bryson of Abbeville, S. C., broke several tackles, slipped but kept his balance, to race 47 yards for the winning score. Bryson Sets Record According to Tom Appenzeller, assistant athletic director, Bryson had 138 yards on 18 carries and three touchdowns, one on a pass from freshman quarterback Gary Campbell of Williamsburg, making his first start. In the game, Bryson became the first Brave to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season, since Joe Greene in 1982. Chowan ended its season in November with a 19-10 win over Potomac State to finish with a record of six wins, four losses and 1 tie. Garrison. Hawkins Enshrined Coach Jim Garrison and assistant coach Jerry Lee Hawkins were honored prior to the start of the last game of the season. They, and two former Brave athletes, Ben Rich of Newport News, and Dave Whaley of New Castle, Del., were introduced to the fans. All four had been selected for a special honor later in the day by being in ducted into the Chowan Sports Hall of Fame. Mayor Billy Hill, of Mur freesboro, read a proclamation honoring Hawkins and Garrison who are in their 30th year at Chowan. President Bruce Whitaker announced that by action of the Board of Trustees the foot ball stadium was being named the James G. Garrison Stadium. Later, at the Hall of Fame banquet. Dr. Whitaker said that the baseball field would now be known as the Jerry L. Hawkins Baseball Field. , Assisting beautification pro/ect Jack Hassell, left, director of physical plant, and Bill Garvey, Stu dent Government Association president, presented a cfieck for ‘500 to Mrs. Diane Dixon, chairman of the landscape beautifica tion project sponsored by the Murfreesboro Chamber of Com merce. The student body also contributed ‘914 to help the Mur freesboro Fire Department repair its ladder truck. Students make contribution to Murfreesboro projects Chowan student body has made contributions totaling over $1,400 to two Murfreesboro organizations. The students contributed $914 to the Town of Murfreesboro to help with the purchase and repairs of a used ladder truck used by the Fire Depart ment. The amount represents one dollar per student enrolled at Chowan for the fall semester, stated Ben Sutton, business manager. Noted Sutton, “We are pleased that our student body has responded in this manner to the fund raising activities of our Fire Department.” Gene Byrd, Murfreesboro Fire Chief, responded by saying “I deeply thank the entire student body of Chowan College for the contribution of $914.1 think that it is absolutely wonderful that those students were willing to help such a needed cause. Although we are a long way from reaching our goal to refurbish our ladder truck, the kindness expressed by Chowan will cer tainly help us to work harder to achieve it.” Helps with Community Beautification Project The students also contributed $500 towards the landscaping beautifica tion project adopted by the Murfreesboro Chamber of Commerce. The project will beautify entrances to the downtown area according to Ray Dixon, president of the Chamber of Commerce, and Mrs. Diane Dixon, chairman of the project. Dixon and Diane Dixon thanked the students for their thoughtful dona tion, which they said will go a long way toward completing the beautifica tion project. Student Government Association president, Bill Garvey of Virginia Beach, said the students were happy to make the donations to help the Murfreesboro community. “The people in Murfreesboro have done a lot for the students and this is one way we can return the favors and show our appreciation,” Garvey noted.
