for excellence
Chowan students received
awards for citizenship, service,
academic and athletic achieve
ment during Awards Day Friday,
April 29, in the Helms Center.
The annual. The Chowanoka,
was dedicated to Dr. R. Hargus
Taylor, chaplain, who was cited for
his dedication to helping students
grow mentally, physically and
spiritually.
President Bruce E. Whitaker
presented the awards assisted by
Dr. B. Franklin Lowe, Jr., dean of
the college.
Top Awards
Cecil Manning Davis of Cary was
named Best All Around Student.
Laura Ann Ryals of Siler City
received the Merit Award. Angela
Elizal>eth Felton of Suffolk, Va.,
and Lyle Scott Cassell of Harrison
burg, Va., were presented Superior
Citizenship. Cassell was one of five
students selected to the Order of
the Silver Feather for loyalty and
service to the campus community.
Ernest Boyce, III of Tyner, and
Tara Lynne Williams of Conway,
were triple winners. Boyce cap
tured two of the top awards
presented by the Department of
Business. He received the Marylou
Jones Armstrong Business Award
and Outstanding Student in Com
puter Information Systems.
Order of Silver Feather
Williams received the Alpha Pi
Epsilon Award in business and the
Highest Scholastic Average
(Sophomore). Both Boyce and
Williams were named to the Order
of the Silver Feather as were Lisa
Marie Sipley of Vergennes, Vt. and
Kathy Elaine Whitley of Como.
Yolanda Kay Faile of Mur
freesboro received the Highest
Scholastic Average (Freshman)
and was named chief marshal.
Other marshals are Edna Annie
Ruffin of Ahoskie, Robert Wilson
Stewart of Woodland, David W.
Edwards of Murfreesboro, Melissa
Ann Herring of Ahoskie, Jennifer
Rae Stephens of Carrsville, Va.,
and Richard Jeffrey Seymour of
Elizabeth City.
Fine Arts Awards
The Fine Arts Department
presented drama, music and art
awards. In drama, Fabian
Rathbone of WaynesviUe won for
performance and Kenneth McKee
of Asheville for technical.
Leslie Jill Simpson of Princess
Anne, Md., received the Mary
Pierce Music Award and Sharon
Rose Davis of Newport News, Va.,
the Outstanding Sophomore in Art.
The Department of Graphic
Communications presented Most
Outstanding Graduate awards to

Thailand respectively. Martin
Abernathy Gemons of Raleigh
received the Most Outstanding
Resident Assistant Award.
Athletic awards were presented
to Barry Groff of Manlwim, Pa.,
Exchange Qub Athletic Award;
Shawn Patrick Larsen
Parcellville, Va., Joseph Lee
Parker Award for Physical
Fitness; Elaine Marie Fala, Most
Outstanding Female Athlete; and
Martin Darrell Williams of John’s
Island, S.C., Most Outstanding
Male Athlete.
The President’s Cup for overall
competition among the residence
halls was won by Jenkins Hall. In
tramural Team Championships
were taken by Third Floor Simons
Hall for men and Second Floor
Jenkins Hall for women.
