Local Pastors conduct Religious Emphasis Week services Pastors of the Murfreesboro Baptist Church, Murfreesboro First Baptist Church, Mur freesboro Christian Center (Assemblies of God), and Mur freesboro United Methodist Church assisted Chaplain R. Hargus Taylor in conducting Religious Emphasis Week services on campus, March 27-April, 1988. Scheduled in conjunction with Holy Week, the series of evening worship services was concluded with the annual Good Fri day/Easter service of worship in the college chapel on April 1. Various members of the faculty, staff, and student body also assisted in the conduct of the ser vices through Scripture readings, prayers, special music, personal testimony, and the like. Congregatioiis Invited Members d the congregations served by these local pastors were also invited to join the college com munity in its week of special religious emphasis. Theme for the week of special services was “Words From the Cross.” In this regard, each of the speakers utilized one of the “Seven Last Words” of Jesus as his ser mon test. The series was concluded with an emphasis upon the word spoken to the women who visited the tomb of Jesus on Easter mom: “He is Risen! He is not here” (Mark 16:6b). Preachers and texts for each of the evening meetings were: the Reverend Thomas H. Caulkins, Pastor, Murfreesboro Baptist Church, “My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken me?”; the Reverend A. M. Williams, Pastor, First Baptist Oiurch, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do”; the Reverend Philip Foster, Pastor, Mur freesboro Christian Center, “Tru ly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise”; the Reverend Horace McLaurin, Pastor, Murfreesboro United Methodist Church, “Woman, behold your son . . . behold your mother”, and Chaplain Taylor, “I thirst.” Both the local pastors — each of the members of the campus com munity through the regular, week ly services of the particular church to whom he ministers — and the collegians who participated in the series were appreciative of the Religious Emph^is Week focus. Moreover, perhaps the spirit and concern which the college enjoys in its relationships with all local pastors was best expressed in the words of the Reverend Mr. Foster. Writing a word of gratitude to Chaplain Taylor for the invitation to participate in the college’s em phasis, he noted: “... I am always glad to give myself in any way to help you and Chowan College.” Brad is a member of Roduco Assembly of God.
