Class of 1960
MR. JAMES E. ALSTON, SR. of Edenton,
a 27-year veteran wildlife enforcement of
ficer, recently has been promoted to en
forcement captain for Wildlife District I.
Class of 1962
MR. JAMES C. MCGILL, a native of Clin
ton and senior vice president with First
Union National Bank, has been named the
bank’s Western area executive. He has serv
ed with the Army and is a former director of
the Alamance County United Way.
Class of 1963
MR. RAY DIXON was named Citizen of
the Week in January, 1988. He works with
youth at his church. This is a big part of his
life.
MRS. NANCY JOHNSON WILUAMS was
appointed director of the department’s of
fice of personnel by Department of Ad
ministration Secretary James S. Lrfton. She
is a native of Conway in Northampton Coun

Class of 1965
MISS LINDA LEE THACKER of Newport
News, Virginia, and Mr. Marvin Leon Hof-
fler of Sunbury, were married June 27,1987,
at Deer Park Baptist Church in Newport
News, Virginia. Mrs. Hoffler is an elemen
tary teacher with the Newport News School
System. Mr. Hoffler graduated Phi Beta
Kappa and is an Engineering Supervisor
with Newport News shipbuilding.
MR. TOM FISH of Forbush has been nam
ed softball Coach of the Year. Fish, in his
first year as head coach at Forbush, led the
Falcons to the F. A. C. Championship with a
perfect 12-0 mark.
Class of 1966
MRS. MARGARET M. WOOD, Carolina
Telephone’s district community relations
manager in Roanoke Rapids, has been
assigned an expanded region that includes
Rocky Mount communities.
Class of 1967
MR. W. J. “JERRY” BOWMAN, a native
of Mount Airy, has joined Phillips Fiber
Corp. in Greenville, South Carolina, as
technical service representative for con
tinuous filament yams. He is responsible for
all Marvess olefin filament yams produced
at Phillips’ Spartanburg, South Carolina,
facility.
MR. LEWIS N. TERRELL, JR., formerly
of Monroe, has joined Davidson Federal
Savings and Loan Association of Lexington
as vice president. A native of Roanoke,
Virginia, Terrell will be in charge of con
sumer and CMnmercial lending. He has 19
years of commercial lending and retail
banking experience.
Class of 1968
REV. HANK (H.C.) FRANCIS was the
guest evangelist during a victory, praise
and worship service Dec. 3-6, 1987, at the
Murfreesboro Christian Center. He also con
ducted a service at the center at 10:30 a.m.
Sunday morning.
MS. CANDY W. ELEY has recently pass
ed examinations certifying her as an
Ophtahalmic Assistant. The examination
culminates two and a half years of study.
MR. LARRY PACE CASTLE and Miss
Geraline Smith were married on May 14,
1988, m Spring Hill Baptist Church of
Wagram, North Carolina.

MR. BILL SMITH has been appointed as a
local board member of Southem National
Bank of North Carolina. Smith is the presi
dent of Bill Smith Ford Inc. in Southem
Pines.
Class of 1972
MRS. ANNIE PELL JORDAN married
Mr. Richard Jordan on November 4, 1977.
They reside in Chesterfield, Virginia. Mrs.
Jor(ten is a veterinary assistant and is
employed at her spouse’s clinic. They have
a son, Richard Pell Jordan, bom on March
19,1988.
MRS. JUDY FULLER of Fremont was
the speaker at the first “Wonderful Wednes
day Fellowship” (rf the Fremont United
Methodist Church on February 3,1988. Her
presentation focused on Stress Reduction
Skills.
Class of 1973
MRS. CAROLYN BAZEMORE was pro
moted to assistant vice president and
manager of the Winton office of Southem
Bank and Trust.
Class of 1974
MR. SYLVESTER WRIGHT passed his
CPA exam in November of 1987. He is cur
rently employed as a Staff Manager in the
External Affairs Department of American
Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T) in Fair
fax, Virginia.
Class of 1975
MR. JEFFERY J. DANCE and his wife
had a baby girl bom to them on March 22,
1988. They named her Katherine Anne
Dance.
MR. CHARLES ALAN COSTIN and Miss
Karen Michelle Ross were united in mar
riage February 14, 1988, at the Halifax
United Methodist Church. The couple will
reside in Florence, South Carolina.

MR. RICHARD S. LAYMAN left his posi
tion in Virginia Beach as a computer elec
tronics technician in 1986, and joined a
world-wide missionary organization Youth
With A Mission (YWAM). He has
ministered in Hong Kong, Philippines,
Thailand, Macua, China and Tebet. He is
presently in Taipei, Taiwan learning Man
darin Chinese, for two years and will then be
assigned in the Far East area.
MRS. SHIRLEY SPENCER HISER mar
ried Mr. Michael Hiser, 5 years, resides in
Norfolk, Virginia. Shirley is a draftperson
for ITT^elec Service Inc., and Michael is a
maintenance technician of Crestar Banks.

MR. DAVID LYNWOOD ROSS and Miss
Beverly Dawn Jones were married at Im
manuel Free Will Baptist Church in
Durham, North Carolina. The couple will
reside in Durham.

MR. ANTHONY STEVEN TAYLOR and
Miss Marsha Lea Shoffner were united in
marriage on Sunday, April 24, 1988 during
the morning worship services at the New
Goshen United Methodist Church on
Randleman Road in Greensboro, North
Carolina.

MR. DARRELL LEE STEEN has been
named circulation manager for The Laurin-
burg Exchange.
Class of 1981
MISS LISA MARIE ROSSBOROUGH and
Mr. Scott Warren Osiecki were married on
September 26, 1987. Both graduated from
Rochester Institute of Technology. The cou
ple now reside in Skaneateles, New York,
where T.isa is a self-employed Graphic
Designer and Scott is a &nior Industrial
Designer.

MRS. LEESA ENGLE CORNELIUS and
her husband Dean are proud to announce
the birth of a son Derek Jeffery, bom on
March 29, 1988. Dean and Leesa have two
daughters, Dana and Asten, ages 3 and 19
months. They are now living in East Bend,
North Carolina.
MRS. MARY LOU DRAKE and her hus
band Franklin are proud to announce the
birth of a son Jason Wayne, bom on August
26, 1987. Franklin and Mary have one other
son, Matthew, age 4. They are now living in
Franklin, Virginia.

MISS DONNA JEAN SIMONS of
Powellsville and Mr. James Blount Morris
of Colerain were married at Holy Grove
Baptist Church on November 29, 1987, in
Ahoskie.
MR. MITCHELL EUGENE GRIFFIN
and Miss Robin Denise Anderson were mar

MISS SHARON EUZABETH WHEELER
and Mr. Donald Ray Daughtridge, both of
Greenville, were united in marriage Satur
day at 3 p.m. at the Woodland Baptist
Church in Woodland. After a wedding trip to
Myrtle Beach, the couple will reside in
Greenville.
MR. JESSE NORMAN ALLEN, JR. of
Pantego and Miss Sylvia Paige Harrison of
Plymouth were united in marriage on
March 12, 1988, at Zion’s Chapel Church of
Christ in Roper, North Carolina.
MISS SANDRA ELLEN WHITLEY and
Mr. Allan Barth Banks were united in mar
riage May 21, 1988, at Buckhom Baptist
Church, Como, North Carolina.

MISS CYNTHIA SUE PIKE and Mr. John
Louis Griffin were married on February 13,
1988, at Lighthouse Baptist Church in
Charlotte. Cindy is a typesetter for Kail
Kwik Printing, and John is an airman elec
trician in the U.S. Navy. The couple reside
in Charlotte.
MR. HUGH BENJAMIN GARNER, II of
Greenville and Miss Cathy Irene King of
Lake Gaston were united in marriage on
December 31, 1987, at Ebenezer United
Methodist Chiu'ch in Darlington, South
Mrs. Mary Kunkle
accepts appointment
to Board of Advisors
Mrs. Mary D. Kunkle, of Portsmouth, has
assumed a position on the Board of Ad
visors, according to President Bruce E.
Whitaker.
Mrs. Kunkle is the widow of Dr. Herman
Melvin Kunkle, former chairman of the
Board of Advisors. Dr. Kunkle served for
almost 35 years as an orthopaedic surgeon
in Portsmouth, his native city.
He died on March 12,1987. Kunkle began
his service on the Board of Advisors in
February 1968 and became chairman in
Septembier 1973.
Virginia Native
A Holston, Va., native, Mrs. Kunkle
received her R.N. from KnoxviUe General
Hospital, Knoxville, Tenn. She served as a
R. N. at McGuire Veterans Hospital, Rich
mond, Va., and R.N. and financial
secretary. Orthopaedic Surgery Ltd., Port
smouth, where her husband practiced
medicine.
A member of Western Branch Baptist
Church, Mrs. Kunkle has served in com
munity activities as a volunteer worker for
the R^ Cross and Hospital Auxiliary. She is
part president of the Portsmouth Academy
of Medicine Auxiliary.
Mother of Four Children
Mrs. Kunkle is membership chairman for
the International Flying Nurses Associa
tion. She has four children, Melvin, 40;
James A., 39; Timothy L., 34; and Mary K.
Goodenow, 29.
Dr. Whitaker said he was pleased that
Mrs. Kunkle had accepted the invitation to
serve as a Chowan advisor. He said that
among other duties advisors serve as inter
preters of the college in their communities.
Whitaker noted, “Despite a heavy de
mand on their time from their work and
other civic and community service, Chowan
advisors find time to devote their interest
and energies to the college. Their sugges
tions and ideas serve to strengthen all
phases of the operations and programs of
the college.”

Club on Lake Gaston in Valentines,
Virginia.
MR. DAVID MORRIS SPARROW and
Miss Rhesa Michelle Lewis were married on
May 1,1988, at Trinity Episcopal Church in
Chocowinity, North Carolina. Following a
wedding trip to Florida, the couple will
reside in Washington.
MR. PATRICK MACMILLAN WILLIAMS
and Miss Lisa Fay Stephenson spoke their
vows of marriage on February 27, 1988, at
Emerywood Baptist Church. The couple will
reside at Westchester Key Apartments.

OFFICER BRENTON M. SPIVEY has
been assigned to Columbus County where he
will be enforcing game, fish, and boat laws
and regulations. He wiU live in Whiteville.
MISS PEGGY DIANE JOYNER of
Ahoskie and Mr. Lonnie Perry Walston, Jr.
of Roxobel were united in marriage on
December 19, 1987, in the bride and
bridegroom’s future home.

Baptist Church in Pfafftown, North
