SADD Ralli; Lonise Bias featured speaker Lonise P. Bias, mother of the late Len Bias, was the featured speaker at the Second Annual Students Against Driving Drunk (SADD) Rally in early October. Her son, Len Bias, was the University of Maryland basketball player who died as a result of drug abuse in 1986, just two days after being drafted by the Boston Celtics. “Mrs. Bias takes this personal loss as a mission to help others avoid her son’s tragic end. She ’ tours the country addressing issues on drugs, alcohol, family, hope and love," stated Venesee Chapment, spokesperson for Mrs. Bias, from Maryland. The rally was held in Lakeside Student Center and was sponsored by the college SADD chapter and Student Development Services. Challengei Youth Mrs. Bias’ message is positive as she challenges youth to wage war against substance abuse. She addresses the issue of peer pressure in an attempt to instill hope in the lives of youth and steer them away from substance abuse. An inmate from the prison system who is incarcerated for dnig-related crimes spoke to students through the Think Smart Program, to help young people inow about life in prison. Booths, displays, information ibout drugs, and free buttons, stickers, balloons, and materials here available to students at the RaUy. ' TeUofWork Students shared what they are doing at their schools to combat alcohol and drug abuse during a “Show ’n Tell” time. The Rally was coordinated by Roanoke-Chowan Human Services Center in Union and Chowan College working with area health education professionals from four county Boards of Education. Area junior high, high school, college students from all over Northeastern North Carolina at tended the SADD Rally, which was from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Other Speakers Other featured speakers for the day included Ted Stone, a minister and former addict, who talked with students about the problems of addiction; and Roxanne Ellington, an adult child of an alcoholic and counselor with the Duke Substance Abuse Program for Youth in Durham, who discussed the problems of children of alcoholics. Funding for the Rally was provided by area industries in cluding Eagle Snacks in Rober- $onville. Union Camp, NCNB, and civic clubs including Murfreesboro •Rotary, Murfreesboro Exchange, Ahoskie Kiwanis, Murfreesboro Exchangettes, and Murfreesboro merchants. Dawn also works parttime in the Of fice of Counseling and Career Development. Dawn is one of 455 Chowan students who work up to 20 hours per week to help pay for their college education. Without this financial aid, many of these students would not be able to re main in college. Chowan is pleased to provide and help pay for the work of students who take this kind of in itiative. Each year, Chowan pays thousands of dollars from its operating budget to students needing financial aid. Chowan must look to its friends for help.
