,,.'riIK JUULICAL RECOItDEU, .WEDNESDAY. MA Y .10, JKO. ....Nine persons received the ordinance of baptism in the First Baptist church, Ral eigh, on Sunday last four in the morning and five at night. Just preceding the ad ministration o$ the Lord's supper, the right hand of fellowship was extended to thirty seven new members seven of whom had been received by letter, and the remainder by baptism. -. Littleton Items. ' ' Bro. R. VanDeventer was here with the pastor," Dr. John Mitchell, during the1 past week assisting in a series of meetings. He remained with us eight days, preaching twice a day. His manner of conducting these services seemed to be beyond criticism. The Spirit worked with him from the be ginning, and souls were converted at nearly every meeting. There was no excitement, but when everything was quiet, one after another would come forward and give him his hand, tbu9 asking for prayer, or In this way confessing Christ. - His audiences, good at first, increased till the house could not contain them. His preaching was heart 83arching and sympathetic, showing somuch love for the wnner that the? were drawn to the minister, and so much of Christ in his sermons, that eighteen ox twenty souls were : brought to Jesus. On Sunday night ten of these were re ceived by the pastor for baptism; The whole church seems to be revived, and we feel that the effects of this meeting will remain for years to come. , Bro. VanDeventer leaves a host of friends who look forward to meeting Mm attain in , July. On Thursday before the fifth Sunday in July there, will be a Union of Unions held with the church at this place. Never did the sun shine more brightly, or the fresh foliage of the trees and the wild flowei s of the .fields appear more beautiful than on the lonely April morning on which I rode over the fertile hills of Person from Woodsdale to Bro, Beam's diocese. And yet my heart was heavv in the midst of brightness and bloom, for again and again my thoughts re verted, with a sense of personal bereavement, to our irreparable ioss in the aeatn oi uro. W. II. A ousy morn inw with a biar pile of correspondence. A meeting with the Wake Forest Scientific So ciety at which a tired man tried to popular ize a difficult subject and pitied his audience., Then off to . HERTFORD AND BERTIE. Fortunate indeed we are to have in East ern North Carolina such female Colleges as thA Oxford Seminary and the unowan in stitute and euch men at their head as Breth ren Hobgood and Brewer.- I could only see tue latter on mis inp, uu v wuo iv oau pleasure to be his companion in a rorty mue ride to Anlander and back. The In stitute is prospering, as it deserves to be. ThA tiAxt class of "sweet girl eraduates" I will be one of the largest in the long history of the institution. , AULANDER, - ' where only ten years ago there was scarcely a village, is now cue of the most attractive towns in Eastern Carolina, And I have sel dom seen anywhere a more intelligent au dience than that which gathered to greet the Teachers' Association of Northampton, Hertford, and Bertie on yesterday. The large and well-appointed building of the Female Academy was a delightful surprise to me. The school, under the wise admini stration of Miss Chetta Darden, is already beyond the experimental stage and is a pro nounced success. And the same may be Baid of Prof. Reese's excellent Academy for boys. The Association was presiueu over by Prof. Boggs of Windsor, and stir ring addresses were made by him and Messrs Mitchell, Scarboro, ' Shaw, v Brewer, and others. It was not a Baptist meeting, of course but it would be hard to attend any sort of a meeting in Bertie without meeting the brethren. And it is a bright day when one can look into the faces of such co-workers as Early and Curtis and Kennedy and the Mitchells and a score of others. The memory of the night spent in the home of our venerable Bro. Mitchell between Mur freesboro and Anlander will abide as a pleasing possession. Educational interest is at high tide at Aulander, as it is, I repice to believe in maay localities in the State. It is specially gratifying to discern the in creased interest of many of oar Baptist peo ple in the education of their sons and daugh ters. Almost evtiy where I meet yourg rat n and boys who expect within a few years to attend Wake Forest College. - . ' GOOD NEWS. Just as I was on the eve of leaving home, ' I received a telegram from JSew iork con taining the offer of five thousand dollars for the "Royal Chair" on condition that we raise $20,000. And already a few unsolicited subscriptions have begun to come in. Con cerning which there may be more to be said hereafter,- C, E. Taylor.
