SC Pride Continued from page 1 South Carolina has traditionally held its statewide event in the fall. Florence, in the Pee Dee region, will sponsor the event on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 20 and 21. Building upon the success of a bar-b-que and other events held last weekend, the Pee Dee region is set to host a more limited statewide gay and lesbian pride event in the fall. The chapter in Florence raised nearly $2,500 from a bar-b-que and fund-raiser on June 17. “We wanted to get one positive event under our hat before we became a lot more vocal or visible in the Florence-Pee Dee area,” Rickert said. “We accomplished that.” The June event was held on the grounds of a Dupont Chemical facility in Florence. A Dupont employee arranged for the event to be held at the plant. Dupont has a policy prohibiting discrimination against gay and lesbian employees. The October 20-21 pride event will fea ture a formal event and a drag pageant on the first night of die celebration. A picnic and festival will follow on Oct 21. The Saturday event will feature speakers, enter tainment, food and vendors. A Tribute to Tony Snell Tony Snell has been the long-time leader of the SCGLMP. He devoted hundreds of hours to event planning, lobbying and orga nizing the gay and lesbian forces. He resigned as president of the organization to spend more time with his partner and for other personal endeavors. The current vice president of the organi zation has high praise for Snell. “Tony was invaluable to getting the organization to its present state,” said Rickert. “Tony — and others — were the lifeblood of SCGLPM for years to its point now.” SCGLMP continues meeting every 3rd Sunday at the Gay and Lesbian Community Center (1108 Woodrow St.) in Columbia at 2 pm.
