Schlessinger as a prospective running mate. Newsweek and USA Today both reported that Schlessinger, who has called homosexuality a “biological error,” was on Buchanan’s short list of six possible vice presidential running mates, along with Rep. Tom Cobum (R-Okla.), Teamster president James HofFa, GOP presidential wannabe Alan Keyes, Iran-Contra scandal figure Oliver North, and John Silber, ex-president of Boston University. Buchanan reportedly has 293 Reform Party delegates, just one short of the 50 percent majority needed to assure his nomination. John Aravosis of StopDrLaura.com said of the news, “Pat Buchanan and Laura Schlessinger is a match made in... well, it’s a match. Buchanan and Schlessinger are two people who make deeply intolerant statements, yet when challenged on their language, resort to discredited science one day, or claim to speak for God the next.” School OKs gay ‘dorm parents’ EXETER, N.H. (Jun 12) — The New York Times reports that Phillips Exeter Academy, one of the nation’s most prestigious college prep schools, is following the lead of similar schools by letting gay and lesbian couples serve as “dormitory parents” on campus. The paper reported that trustees at the school approved the policy, saying they have taught tolerance at the school and that the school itself must live by what it teaches. The new policy won’t take effect for another full school year, the trustees said, because they wanted to give parents an opportunity to transfer students to other schools if they objected to the policy change. Three years ago, the Concord Academy in Concord, Mass., started the change in prep school policies and was quickly followed by the Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., where the new policy takes effect this fall. Jackson to mayors: Get tested SEATTLE (Jun 12) — Speaking at the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Seattle, the Rev. Jesse Jackson called on the nation’s mayors Nation to publicly take HIV tests in an effort to encourage more people to also get tested. Jackson told the mayors that taking the tests themselves publicly “will attract media attention and public education” to encourage people in their own cities and towns to also get tested. Some of the mayors gave Jackson’s proposal a cool reception, but others, such as Roosevelt Dom, the mayor of Inglewood, Calif., said he was “excited” by Jackson’s call to help fight the epidemic more actively. NY top cop calls rocker Springsteen a ‘floating fag’ NEW YORK (Jun 11) — Fans of rock superstar Bruce Springsteen are going ballistic because of comments about their idol by the head of the New York state chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police who called “The Boss” a “dirtbag” and a “floating fag” and urged a boycott of Springsteen by the nation’s police officers. The odd flap exploded when New York announce the opening of North Carolina’s .annual pageant competition season. For preliminary dates, email Felicia at timfp2@hotmail.com or call Von Entertain ment, Inc. at (704) 373-0624 pr simply ask your favorite nightclub when their America pageant is scheduled.’' 4 I I FOP president Bob Lucente was quoted by the online music web site, SonicNet, as saying of Springsteen: “He’s turned into some type of fucking dirtbag. He goes on the boycott list. He has all these good songs and everything, American-flag songs and all that stuff, and now he’s a floating fag.” Lucente later issued an apology for using the word “fag” but refused to apologize for his other statements about Springsteen and his unrecorded song, “American Skin.” The song, which has only been performed in concert once so far deals with the 1999 death of Amadou Diallo, who was shot 41 times by New York City police officers while he stood unarmed in the doorway of his Bronx apartment building. The officers, who were later acquitted of murder and manslaughter charges, said they mistook a wallet Diallo was holding for a gun. At several Internet web sites, Springsteen fans charged Lynch and Lucente with “knee jerk reactions” and “idiotic bigotry.” Several fans asked what a “floating fag” is and why the cop union leaders described the decidedly heterosexual Springsteen in such derogatory terms. Many Springsteen fans said there was little chance a boycott of the concerts would go very far since all 10 concerts were sold out.
