A New Disease
Trachoma, a serious eye' disease,
is North Carolina's latest disease
Dr. A. D. Foster, the government expert
"who went to Western North
Carolina about a month ago to look
for trachoma, a rare form of infectious"
eye' disease, reports hating
found a few cases in Caldwell county.
Trachoma has recently been
found rather prevalent In the mountainous
regions of eastern' Tennessnd
Wentnelry. nnd IT ta wottvsrt
surprising to And some of It on thlr
<Mde of the state line.
Dr. Foster expects to make e
survey of our western counties and
if trachoma is found, prevalent. *r.do&vor
to learn the extent and provalence
of this disease.
Trachoma is a very serlou^ rtfr
and long drawn out disease which
usually results in* blindness in the
course of yqars if let go unattended.
* Comparatively little is knowabout
It. We know that it is tiv,
factious', f. e., that if a person having
trachoma uses, a towel, wash
cloth, handkerchief or other article
which later comes Into contact with
the eyes of a healthy person, the
latter Is very likely to contract the
dircpte. In this way members if
rt6e ear family frequently contract
trachoma from each other, and
school children also freqently contract
it from other children.
" About the best advtCe thnt can
be given with reference to avoiding
this disease I* to avoid the cdrnmon
roller towel. When you avoid such
relics oi a by-gone civilisation ?s
the old roller towel and common
drinking cup. you will avoid exposure
