WASHINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA, OCT. 15, 1015. Tonight's tho night when all Washington will turn into kids. Tho?j big circus is here and,?well, "it looks to us like a big night tonight,"' Watch for tho paragrapher who will connect the coming marriage of President Wilson with the announcement of the position in ref erence to woman suffrage.?Wilson Times. Watch for him? Why. man. he's passed that subject long ago. Wake up! To the paragrapher*: Trout out the names of flowers vou would see adopted as the State flower of North Carolina. We .may change our mind, but right now we would cast our ballot for tho peaeli blossom?.? News and Observer. Peach blossoms ure good enough, but judging from recent event*, ami events to cotne in the near fu ?uri-. all we <-au see at the present time is Orange Blossom*. SOME FREE ?'BOOSTING." One of the prominent business of the city yesterday afternoon gently chided us for the amount of spaee we were giving to not in." of civic improvement* in the other towns in this section of the State, lie remarked that he had noticed numerous article? recently, com ing from K i Ilk ton. Greenville. New Hern and other cities, which | were a decided ' K*hi" for iho-c municipalities. He inquired our tva*?u for publishing the-e article and we told him. Every item, of the nature referred to above. should Ik* an inceu tive for greater improvement in Washington. When we read of Kinsioii's paving project. Craven couuly's good'road work and sim ilar activities in Pitt county, we should compare the work that these, cities ami counties are doing with what we are accomplishing here. There i> no use in building a wall around Washington and shutting out the outside world. We must keep in touch with tin* progress of these other cities. We must do our share in development and pro gress venous. We cannot rest asiisticd on our past accomplishments. A citv must either go backwards or forwards:?it cannot stand still. The articles mentioned evidently caused dissatisfaction on tho part ot the merchant who mentioned tin m to us. That was our in tention in publishing them, and if we have caused dissatisfaction, we an- repaid for our work. We want the people of Washington to ho dissatisfied with our present conditions. We ought never to lie content with what we have done, but should eontinuo to strive still further onward. We have achieved great tilings;? we have tho Ijest electric light and water plant in the State; we aro installing a ne w sewer system and wo have done a number of other things; but ther* U still much to lie done, and if we want to keep up with the pace set by the other cities, we must lie and work hard in making Washington tho lug city thai ft is ?jvituj to brrotnr, if everyone does his share. lucid-litally. we might remark that we receive value for value in all the news items that we publish o>nc??rning the cities the mer chant mentioned. Probably not many of our residents read the New Bern. Kinst<>u and Greenville paper*, but if they did. thev would >oc just as many items s I ?out Washington in those papers thev read in the Daily News al*?iit the others. PEACE IN MEXICO. The announcement of this country's recognition of Carranza 'nl playing an important parr in bringing about peace in Mexico. Lat est reports from across the Rio Grande are to the effect that VillaI is making a last desperate stand and that he cannot hold out long against the larger armies of Carranza. Winn it became known in Mexico that, the I'nifed Sta t is had rec ognised <'arranza. a change of sentiment at once became evident. Many of Villa's most ardent supporters immediately turned their| alh giancc over t?? Carranza and are now assisting him in bringing a'lMit their former chieftan's downfall. Several of Villa's armies have deserted his cause ami have joined the forces of Carranza. It seem* ? nI v a matter of a short period of time in-fore Villa will b" {??reed ror<nrrem|er. On the wind'*. I he outlook for peace is brighter in Mexico at present than at. any time during the last, two years. The countrv is heaitily sick of thi ruinous war and the people are anxious to it over with.
