BAKBS U VATO Proprietor. 9A.RL OOEHUU Editor. WASHINQTON, NORTH CAROLINA, NOV. 5, 1915. Police Officer Nye ia today receiving the congratulations of bis many friends bore at being freed from the malicious charges which were brought against him at Belhaven. President Wilson has designated his "offirial portrait" which h( id willing to have appear on the United States money and stamp jean* to come. We will probably do the aamo within the next day or twu. The first column on the front pa^ of the News aad Observer yesterday had a rather killing appearance. The following three headlines appeared in rapid succession: "Xew Bern Child Killed by Trolley," ''Greensboro Girl Hit by Train; Killed." and "Three Trainmen Killed in Freight WroeJc." The Rocky Mount Telegram state* that "It takes the man behind ihe guns to win the battles, but it takes the woman behind the man k> keep luxn there." Our curiosity prompts us to a?k what's be laud th* wunuia ? Every citizen who is interested in the progress of education and especially those who are desirous of bettering their own education should be present at the meeting thai is to be held a: the high school fcinifht AURORA? A LIVE COMMUNITY. One of our prominent local citizens, who was in Aurora Wed nesday, brought back a report of the enthusiastic manner wiih which the farmers of that secti<ai were preparing for tho fair that ia to be held in Aurora next week. Ho stated that he was present at one of the meetings they held and that he could not help but fce impressed by the genuine spirit of unity and co-operation which was so prevalent. The farmers in the vicinity of Aurora are showing themselves lo be wide-awake and progressive citizens. By their earnest en deavor* they are putting that little city on the map. They have interested themselves in the builidng of a new *?.-ho-?l h^use, in the improvement of their etreets, in building new roads and now they are working for the biggest and beat fair that has ever basu held {here. Their work deserve* the highest praise. They are going about things in the right fashion and. what's beet of ull, there are no factions or classes of any kind to act as a "pull-back." It ia to bo sincerely hoped that they will never lose the progre* aive spirit that they are evincing at the present time and that their work in the future will be still even greater than it has been in the past. Today and tomorrow are "big buying days" in Washington. We earnestly urge our readers to look over the many bargains that arp offered in today's issuo by the merchants of the city. Greenville, according to report, is going to mBke an endeavor t'j ??euro a Carnegie Library. Washington could well afford to look into this matter for ht-r own welfare. A wallet, containing several hundred dollars in cash, was re cently lost by une of our citizens. That accounts for the large number of men whom we have s'.-tn walking with bowed heads dur ing the last few days. ""liie Chamber of Commerce will hold its regular monthly meet ing next Tuesday night. It isn't too 'arly to begin arranging your plans 30 that you can b? present. Bryan i?s g*"?ing to be at Kinston and Wilson n*?xt week. He's fitting dangerously close to Washington. KEEPING IX PHYSICAL SHAPE. There is probably not one man out of ten in Washington who gives a moment of thought to keeping himself in physical condition. .Moat of thom get no further exercise than walking to and from storo or office daily. If thf-v attempt Jo run to a fire they blow like porpoises after covering hulf a bl'^ck. If anyone snapped a rubber band against the chests of some of (hem, thevM cough them selves to death. Probably tho principal reason why more thought i-n* t given to eierri so and training is hern use no man has very triueh taste f<?r going in for anything by himself. fr ,-v*.u Uromcs monotonous and he gives it up. Hut if a rrowd of men \v?nt in for physical culture, it would put tho matter in a differmt light and there i* no doubt but. that a large numlxT of men uvuM join in tho rriov* m?nt. Too much importance cannot plae?>d on the nc<d > >t keeping in good condition and it is to be regretted rhat we have no gymna sium here whree exercise could be taken under proper supervision. Just because we haven' I any, however, is no reason why wo shouldn't work for one. There should l*? lit.tle trouble in supporting such an institution, for it would l>e an attraction to old and young alik*\ It is at least worth looking into and seeing whether some rir ranee men ts cannot be made. RE0I8TKR FOR GOOD KOAhs In four weeks the votore of Washington town?hip will be? axked to roginter anew for the bond election that is U) Ik- held on January 4th. We may be a bit premature , hut we dpsirc to iiuproflw the fart upon the minds of the voter* that only thone who rejfiater can| vote ? it dowm't make any difference whether hilt ton or twenty five renter.
