Exchange jour Christmas gifu tuarly. New Year is the next stop. And we might add that Now Year weans L?ftp Year. "A report made by J. Hryau Grimes. Secretary of State of North Carolina, shows that the number of automobiles is rapidly climbing skyward," states the New Born Sun-Journal. One of them attempted to go skyward in Washington Saturday night by climbing up a lele phone polo. The bill collectors will now proceed to get busy aud haro their gilts ready within a few day*. NOT TIME FOR PEACE. It will probably 1*? a good thing for the world in general that Henry Ford failed in bis peace mission. It is to In? hoped that everyone else, who tries to ring the warring nations of Europe to peace at the present lime will fail. Europe is in no condition for l>eace. If Ford's plan had worked out. it would liavo brought about a faise peace. It would be a thine of patches, a mere armed true", deciding nothing and providing a men' period of recuperation after which the nation* would be at each others' throats again. What Ford aixl so many other well-intending pacifists fail to un derstand is that the war is not an aimless Killkenny riot, nor an in ternational battle- ropal for a material pri/e, but that Europe t- hear ing for principles. And there can be no durable aud satisfying pca'v until the issue is determined one way or the other, by dint of blood and treasure, so decisively that it will not have to come t<> arbitra ment again. The issue i? as clear in Europe as ours was in our civil war. Then) we settled for jpod ?he question whether slavery should continue to! exist in America. Europe, we trust, if let alone, will settle for ci-xl the qut?tion whether nations may *till go forth and take what they want from thoir neighburs by force, or whether there shall be no conquest except by peaceful methods in honest competition. It has been said that this U a war of autocracy against democracy. And so it is, in u way. That is to say, there is more autocracy on otic ?ide, and more democracy on the other, lint the big dominant question is simply this ? whether a nation, any more than an indi vidual, may arm to the teeth aud jto out and "shoot up" n civilized ?-??lumunity aitJ take and ke [> whatever real u?tate and personality it happens to want. And if the war is allowed to run its course. Europe will probably emerge able to live an orderly, civilized existence hereafter, without any outlawry and gun-toting. HALF THE BATTLE IS OVEN. The registration books for the coming Herti?.i? in Washington township have closed. Those who oppoee the bond issue have made fheir fight. They may now r^st and wait ti n til the measure is decid ed. for it will not l?e nectary for them to rote at the polls. From a survey of the registration books, it is believed that the l*m*l issue will earn.*. The vote will be rl??se, but it is expected that a majority of from fifty to seventy-five will be polled in favor of the ia?ue. The advocates of the project, however, still have their work fc do. They uhouki endeavor to rnolce the majority as large as possible and they should remember that one important thing: TO CAST THEIR VOTE AT THE ELECTION. If we are going to carry the issue, let's do no by a big majority, so there will he no xq nibbling or discussion after the election is over. SPAIN'S ATTITUDE. With sll of the principal countries of Europe engaged in the war. it is rather surprising that Spain, noted for her impetuosity in war matters, baa not joined in the conflict. For several months after the war started, rumor? were current to the, effect that she would join one aide or the other. These rumor* proved without foundation and the country is still at peace. Now, however, another report, is brought forward, which might l>c taken an an indication thai Spain is about to enter the war. She is alleged to have purchased several million rounds of ammunition in New York nnil to have established a 'hirty million credit loan for other munition*. It is believed she may !*? preparing to enter the war on the aide of riie Teutons to retake fribraher and annex Por tugal. Spain has no principle to light for and is evidently going to enter the war ? if ahe enters it at all for the jrain that it will l>e to her. Those who are in touch with national affairs of the Spaniards, claim that, the only reason why that country is not already engaged in war fare is because the inducements have not been big enough. Spain is in a class with Turkey. Bulgaria snd the other countries of Europe of the lower type and she will probably join forces with tRem be/ere tlie war i* over.
