H. W. Hood Mentions Some
Highlights In Development
Of Brunswick County;
Was Established In
Year 1746
Editor's Note:: The other
day we asked H. W. Hood
for some historical information
about Brunswick county.
We cannot use the following
article as we had planned,
but we are using it as a
news story because of the
valuable information which it
contains.
Brunswick county was established
in the year 1746, March 1.
Twenty years later, in the year
1767, there were only 209 white
men and 106 colored men.
This small population 18 years
after the establishment of the j
county built the first county;
court house at Lockwoods Folly, j
now Supply, in the year 1764. !
In the year 1792, twenty years
after the first court house was j
built at Lockwoods Folly, the
fnuntv seat was moved to Smith
ville, " now Southport. Fourteen |
years later in the year 1806,
a second court house was built
of wood on brick pillows. Forty- J
two years later in the year 1848
the present court house was
built of brick and has now been j
in use for 87 years. A few years j
ago an addition was made to1
the building and the courtroom
was made over.
In the year 1862 the county
court ordered the clerk and register
of deeds to remove the re-!
cords to a place of safety, a Fed-1
eral attack being apprehended.
The will books begin in the
year 1763 and are complete; the
deed books begin the same year
and also are complete. The court
dockets begin in 1781, the mar- >
riage register in 1810.
Standing on the front porch of
this historical old court house
and looking riverwards you see
the river basin, where as many
as sixteen pirate vessels have
been known to swing at anchor.)
In the distance old Fort Caswell,
which tiie government commenced
in the year 1826, and just across
the street from the court house
stands the old colonial Fort Johnson,
the first fort in the province
of North Carolina.

als; and the Bank of Brunswick
against E. Sellers.
Court will continue throughout
the week or until all of the cases
on the court calendar have been
disposed of. Some of the actions
scheduled for trial during the
latter part of the week are of
more interest than those already;
disposed of during this term.

tion, distributing sheets of reci- j
pes to be carried by the leaders j
back to their local clubs at the
regular club meetings.
In addition to the major sub-!
ject, "Food and Nutrition," Miss
Thomas devoted much time to!
discussing the necessity of a good
year-round garden for every rural
family in North Carolina and
urged the leaders to encourage
all club members to join the state
and county Fall and Winter Garden
contest.
The award of merit certificate
was displayed and explained
and members were asked to work
for one. These awards will be
given by the extension specialist
under whom the major subject
was persued at the completion
of two years of active home demonstration
work and will be signed
by the state agent, Mrs. Jane
S. McKimmon.
The major subject for Brunswick
county for the past year
has been Foods and Nutrition.

system.
Books are to be sent to the
county superintendent's office in
each county where they will
be stamped. From this office
they are to be distributed to the
principals of the schools who, in
turn, will give them to the teachers
of the various grades to be rented
to the students. Books are
rented for one-third the purchase
price and rent must be paid cash
in advance. ,
Boks cannot be purchased from
the teacher nor from the principal
but only at the office of |
the county superintendent. Of- j
ficials in charge of the rental
system urge that all children
who possibly can secure second
hand books please do so.
Ail basal books for the lower
grades will be included on the

\
list of rental books. Basal books (
include those which form the
basis of the standard course of 1
study. There are other supple- i

ESTABLISH NEW
SALES RECORDS
AT WHITEVILLE

ge baskets enabled the buyers to
bid in 1,009,368 pounds of the
leaf and since Monday's offerings
were by far better than was
spread on the floors any other j
day in the week, a higher average
was received for this days
sale. This sale of more than
1,000,000 pounds averaged $25.97
vinn/irori however, it can be
said that Monday's prices were [
no higher than those paid on j
other days of the week. The j
Whiteville market has been unusually
steady every since open- j
ing day and if the quality of the !
weed offered each day had been j
the same there would have been!
no difference in lach day's indi- j
vidual average.
Unless further reports are re-1
ceived from the Whiteville mar-1
ket, news of this weeks sales are i
not available. However, on Satur- j
day it was reported that tobacco :
which had been streaming into
the city since late Friday after- [
noon was rapidly filling the six i
warehouses of this marketing)
town, and a sale near one million i
pounds was expected for Mon- j
day. With a season poundage of j
9,493,792 after August 30th's sale I
and this weeks sales expected to j j
be equally as heavy as this news
story is read the Whiteville mar- j
ket will have passed the 12,000,-1
000 pound mark. This means that |
this fast growing market has sold
as much tobacco during the first j
20 marketing days of the pres- '
ent season as was sold there all:
We have four first sales
next week at ANDERSONS
