Many of these young men are already for the 'battle of life, but they find the door of opportunity closed to them. Naturally they are puzzled by the turn of affairs in a changing world, which apparently have robbed them of a foothold on the ladder which leads to success, Major Nutting says. i The U. S. Marine corps, however, has provided a loophole for [ the ambitious young man who is not content to mark time while j the country is working its way out of the current depression. It has established an educational system that is sure-fire for any worthwhile youth who is determined to go ahead, and which has proved itself to be as nearly Derfect as human ingenuity can make it. Fortunately the system is so arranged that the basic education of the student, whether It be high school or college, leaving: no limit to the heights which may be reached. It is literally a school in which anyone may receive instruction with decided profit to himself. Starting about fifteen years ago as an experiment, the success of the Marine Corps Institute has been astounding. Hundreds of Marines have received diplomas in the arts, trades or science. With its units scattered all over the globe from Panama to Peiping, the correspondence method was adopted as the only practicable method. It has worked perfectly. From the school at Washington, diplomas often go to men who have made good as students in China, the Philippines, Hawaii, and elsewhere. Officials believe that their institute has more than fulfilled its plans to produce the best educated military service in the world, _ and it is helping to solve many a young mans* problem. High school graduates from > Virginia, North and South Carolina, Florida and South Georgia are now being accepted for service in the Marines at the Marine Recruiting Station, post office building, Savannah, Ga. Applications will be mailed upon request . FARM CHATS, i Just a few words with you, farmer friend: with harvest time near at hand one is reminded of fall. This brings to mind the need for food crops which will be badly needed?that is green fresh vegetables. Why not plant a fall and winter garden which will supply vegetables for the farm table? It has been determined that one-half acre of land well planted and cultivated will furnish sufficient vegetables for the average family. Pick out a plot of land which will be protected as much as possible from the cold winds. Do not burn the vegetation but mow and allow to wilt before plowing and disking. The school children will need foods rich in vitamins, so why not supply them with carrots, spinach, English peas, turnip greens, beets and broccoli. Also plant some Chinese cabbage you will be pleased with it as a new delightful addition to your table either for salads or for greens. Remember the fattening and growing pigs when you dig potatoes by giving them the small potatoes and vines. Better stilL turn them into the fields after harvesting. For the housewife who wishes to introduce prunes in the family food menu. Why not bake a delightful and delicious cake. Prune Cake 2 % cups sifted flour; 2 tea spoon soda; >4 tea spoon cloves; 1 tea spoon all spice; 1 tea spoon cinnamon; % cup butter or shortening; lfc cup sugar; 2 eggs; 1 cup cooked seeded prunes; 1 cup sour milk. Sift flour once, measure, add soda, salt, and spices, sift together three times work with spoon until creamy. Add sugar gradually, beating after each addition until light and fluffy. Add eggs and prunes and beat until well blended. Add flour alternately with milk, beating smooth.
